Default MZD2766GEW Refrigerator won't cool the fridge; Coils are frozen in freezer

Model Number: MZD2766GEW
Brand: Maytag
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hello,

I have a problem with my Maytag MZD2766GEW side-by-side refrigerator. We recently had a repairman come and take a look at it, saying it may be dust or a regulator (the Adaptive Defrost Board?) that would have to be changed. Well I've opened up the back and had it vacuumed well, but I had noticed that air was not quite flowing into the refrigerator compartment as the flap connecting the two compartments was not opening, showing no real air flow. I then removed the back freezer panel and did a quick defrost of the coils, air seems to be flowing now. We had the same issue awhile back and left it off for several days to allow the coils to defrost before putting everything back. That was this winter, and it's now having difficulties again.

Would a replacement of the Adaptive Defrost Board be required, or is it simply a matter of re-defrosting the coils? All of the fans appear to be functioning normally. I don't have any ohm readers or any proper tools, as I read were advised to be used in other threads. What options do I have?

Thank you.

Hi,

Yes, its likely your Adaptive Defrost Control Board is bad as explained in this thread:
[FIXED] Maytag Refrigerator Model MSD2756DEB is not cooling properly

Adaptive Defrost Control Board Part#61005988
61005988

Unfortunately they don't ship to Canada, you would need to purchase this board at your local appliance parts store in Canada.

Jake

Yes,
a popular failure item.
There is a way to manually initiate defrost.
Carefully find the board with the frig off, then turn on and short the two terminals with your screwdriver---"Test" and "L1" with the frig running.
You can see the two terminals on the pictured board on the left side--the lower two terminals that are attached to the plug that you will be removing from the connector in your frig when you buy the new board.
After about 15-20 minutes the frig fan will start up again. You may have to start the defrost cycle a second time to get the ice melted.
$55 is getting off pretty cheap --if you call a technician, they have to charge for the service call plus the board.

I agree with Jake and Lou. It's the ADC that's failed. If you can't get the part right away, this is how you keep the refrigerator working until you can get it. That ADC turns on a heater under the evaporator every 8 hours or so. This melts the frost off of the coils and keeps the refrigerator frost free. Once the frost builds up on the coils, air can no longer flow across them and it stops cooling. It varies but usually takes about a month to build up enough frost to block the air flow. Once a week take everything in the freezer and move it to the refrigerator. Do this about 9 PM. Unplug the refrigerator and leave the freezer door open. If you keep the refrigerator door closed, anything frozen will stay frozen until morning. Around 9 AM plug it back in and move the stuff back to the freezer. This will get you by until you can get the part.
