Found an entry similar to my problem, but not quite the same (Maytag w/ long preheat time)... My oven (Maytag MGR5710ADW Gas Range) started having problems keeping the temperature during baking cycles and then moved on to not starting quickly (or at all). Through experimentation over time, I found that if I leave one of the burners running, the oven starts and maintains its temperature during the baking cycle. Most recently, I've noticed that when the oven is heating, the gas makes a noise I can best describe as a stuttering sound. If I turn up the burner, the noise diminishes but doesn't go away. I'm assuming that I have a bad regulator or valve somewhere, but I'm not sure which parts are the likely candidates. Most of the parts appear to be expensive enough that I don't want to guess my way through them as I'd end up spending enough to put a dent in the cost of a new unit...
Any ideas? |

Hi,
Are you on Natural Gas or LP Gas? Quote:
Usually when a regulator goes bad, the top burners will decrease with the oven on. Jake

We're on natural gas. I've never noticed the burners on top decrease in volume with the oven running. We've had most of the burners and the oven running at the same time and didn't notice any lack of heat from the burners. The range doesn't have a temperature readout as to the current temp in the oven (would love to have one built in), so I dont' know how close the oven stays to the set point. I did notice last night that the gas flow noise sounded like it was pulsing which was something I've never heard before. I looked inside and glow of the oven burner didn't seem to waver, but as I didn't remove the pans to look at it directly, I may have missed something.

Ok, then its possible your regulator, but first I would contact your local gas company, they will come to your house for free and pressure check your gas line and meter on the street. Its not unheard of to have a bad gas meter.
If they say its fine, then I would get the regulator. Here's the cheapest price I found on the regulator for your model: Manufacturer's Number: 74006429 If you purchase parts from our links here and you install them and it doesn't fix the problem, you have a 30 day full refund when you return them. I looked at the parts list for the whole oven... On the gas delivery side, it appears that there is one valve that manages both the broiler and the oven gas flow. Given that the pressure to the stove top burners is ok and the broiler appears to work correctly, would it be reasonable to assume the pressure regulator is working and its an oven valve problem? The only problem I have with that theory is that, assuming it is only one valve for both the broiler and the oven, why would the broiler work ok, but the oven portion has a problem? I tend to discount a bad meter as I have a gas furnace and gas water heater and both of those work without any issues.

Yes, I agree, if the oven valve was faulty, then you would assume the broiler would be malfunctioning as well.
9 times out 10 its the oven glow bar igniter that causes this issue. Here's the oven glow bar igniter for your model: Manufacturer's Number: 74007498 If you purchase parts from our links here and you install them and it doesn't fix the problem, you have a 30 day full refund when you return them.
