Default Maytag Neptune Dryer MDG4000BWW is NOISY

This morning my wife woke me and shared with me that something was wrong with the dryer. Great start to the weekend! She said when she started the dryer, it began to spin, but then she heard a loud clunk and it stopped. When I checked it out a few hours later, I turned it on. It came on and the drum rotated but it was noisy. It made multiple clicking noises and a rhythmic knocking noise. I quickly shut it off. When you rotate the drum by hand, it pretty much make the same noises.

I'm a do it your-selfer, but not to the degree this might require. Last time I played with a dryer was 1990 and I replaced a thermostat. Not a big deal, but that was when they looked easier to get into. I could see spending $200 -$300 on paying someone to repair it, versus me spending a day or so messing with it.

Based on what I'm telling you, what's your thoughts? Based on what it sounds like, do you think it's worth repairing by a repair person? I believe we purchasaed it new in 2000.

Thanx for your imput.

Hi,

Whats the serial# of your dryer? Its located inside the door on the model# tag.

Possibly your blower wheel or rear rollers.

Here's a help link that shows you how to take it apart to check inside it(UNPLUG YOUR DRYER FIRST):
http://www.applianceaid.com/may-apart.html#new-door

When you get the drum out, turn the motor pulley and see if you hear the noise, then turn the rear rollers.

Let us know what you find.

Jake

Serial Number: 28804763YF
My wife said when she tried to start it this morning, as I described in my post, she said it sounded as though "something dropped".

Also, nothing comes up in the parts list from that link for rollers. Do you mean tumblers?

Before I went to disconnect the belts I decided to turn the drum first. When I did I saw the problem. The blower wheel cracked in half and the shaft spins i what's left of the wheel housing. Do you think there's a need to explore further?

Jake,

Do you know what would cause the blower wheel to break into?

Since I'm here, should I replace anything else? The rollers can be worn, right? How do you tell if they are worn to the point they should be replaced? What about the belt? Since it's not all that difficult to get to these parts, should I let them wear further? Or can I damage something else if I let them go?

Thanks

Sorry for the delay, Had to go out with Family today.

Yes, its common for the blower wheel to just wear out and break like that.

Here's the blower wheel for your model you can order:
Manufacturer's Number: 33001790

33001790

The drum rollers are #24 here, you should have 2 on each side in the back of your dryer drum:

Yes, the rollers can get worn, you change change them while you have it apart.

Here's the dryer drum roller for your model:
Manufacturer's Number: 12001541

12001541

Here's the belt as well #18:
Manufacturer's Number: 33002535

icon33002535

So, it would be like giving it a tune-up while you have it apart.
