Default Jenn-Air ice cubes don't freeze solid - dump water in ice bucket

Model: Jenn-Air JCD2389GT Side-by-Side

For last year of so, the ice maker has been dumping the ice cubes out before they're frozen solid. The unfrozen water in the "ice cube shells" ends up being dump in the bottom of the ice dispenser causing the auger to freeze.

I reviewed the various "hollow ice cube" posts and checked the following.

  • The water supply is a real water valve, not a "saddle valve" and seems to have reasonable flow. The connect to fridge is via nice reinforced "flexible" hose, the the usual kink prone copper line.
  • I checked the freezer temperature - it's currently about 12 degrees. I recently turned the temp down to see if that would help (it have been set "medium" since I bought the unit about 7 years ago), but this had no effect.
  • The internal water filter has been replaced, but the problem persists.
  • I've observed the harvest and fill process, this appears to be normal - the unit doesn't appear to overfill.
  • I've inspected the ice dispenser "trap door" in the freezer door with a flash light. There is a minor amount of light visible around the edge of the door.
If I place "full bar" in the up position after a harvest, and give the cubes a little extra time to freeze, then drop the bar down, the cubes come out normal looking.

To me, it appears the like the units not waiting long enough for the cubes to freeze before starting the harvest process.

Is there an adjustment for this, or do have to replace something?

Here's some pictures of a typical set of "ice cube shells".

Hi Pat,

Ahh, the hollow ice cubes.

Here is a link about the hollow ice cubes:
http://www.applianceaid.com/icemaker.html#hollow

I would first check your water supply that hooks up to your refrigerator in the back.

Take off your water supply line that connects to your water valve in the back and test the pressure on that line, like run some water into a bucket/container to make sure you have good pressure on that line.

If the water pressure is good and strong then the problem is in your water inlet valve:
Here's the one for your model:

Thanks for the info Jake.

I checked the waterline today and it seems ok. I ordered the part you recommended from repairclinic.com.

Can you explain how the low water flow causes this symptom - it's not intuitive to me.

Thanks.

Yes, its all because of low water pressure, its not filling up all the cube slots in your ice maker, thus hollow ice cubes, be seeing that happen for over 20 years, and its always the water pressure whether from your water supply line or water inlet valve.

Since you said your water supply line has good pressure, then it has to be the water inlet valve.

Unhappy

I replace the "second" water inlet valve (there are two in this fridge, the first valve is between the water line from wall and water filter. The output of the water filter feeds the second valve.) and the problem still exist - half frozen cubes and water are dumped into the collection bin.

It appears there's plenty of water in the cube tray, it really looks like the harvesting cycle starts before the cubes are frozen. If I lift "bar" after the tray fills, and wait for the cubes to freeze solid, then lower the bar, the cubes appear normal. Is there anyway to adjust the length time between harvests?

What do you think I should try next?

Replace the first one as well:
Manufacturer part#12001892 is RepairClinic item#936009

Oh wait, you checked all the ice cube slots in your ice maker and they are all full? If thats the case, then its your ice maker thats the problem.

Manufacturer part number D7824706Q is RepairClinic item number 915772
D7824706Q

Its just extremely rare to ever see hollow cubes that are the fault of the ice maker itself.
