Default [FIXED] Jenn-Aire model JSD2789DES ice maker blown up

Did that get your attention? Well, had a shocking experience (or rather nearly so) with my ice maker yesterday so today am without and need advice.

Jake, as usual, you're the first person I come to! The lever that stops the maker from making ice popped out and I let it go for a few days (like an idiot) then yesterday decided I'd better get in there and fix it. Noticed a lot of ice was in solid chunks and figured it was dumping water into the tray or something and just thought it must be part of the lever problem.

Pulled the ice maker out, cleaned it all up, cleared all the mess, put it back in. Couple minutes later my daughter mentioned the lights on both freezer and fridge were out. Went and checked and sure as heck the breaker was tripped. Again, like and idiot, it tried resetting and it tripped again. Okay, went in and unplugged the power connect from the ice maker, reset the breaker and it stayed on. So genius that I am, I plugged that power connector back in.

Now this is where the fun starts! Big pop, about a baseball sized ball of electricity came out of the front of the icemaker towards the rear of the fridge and I pulled that darned plug out again. Now I have a blackened spot on the fridge wall and on the ice tray, but they are cleanable.

So, the question is - do I replace the entire modular ice maker? There are no burns around either end of the power plug, it comes out just fine and both ends are clean. Where the coolant tube runs under the tray and back into the control head, on the side closest to the fuseable link (which did NOT pop like it should have) is scortched and you can see a spray of soot from where it enters into the control head. I'll post pics shortly. The unit was built in early 2000, I purchased it in August of that year.

Edit - pics added:

Why take the change, replace the whole ice maker.

That is not a coolant tube, but a heater.

It heats the tray up just before the fingers come around and dump the cubes out.

If you're interested in a simple pictorial essay of the installation, let me know. I've done that for a couple of different things here on the forums and it might be helpful to other members.

Sounds like a great idea to me and I'm sure others would find it helpful too.
