I have a Maytag Plus Model msd2456dew whish is a side by side fridge freezer. About a week ago i was woken up by what sounded like a "noisy fan", near the top light of the fridge part (when i opened the door). It was early morning and I wasn't going to take it apart at the time, so all I came up with is to disconnect the fridge from the power outlet. After connecting it back after 5 seconds the noise stopped and fridge/freezer kept on working for another few days. Then the "noisy fan", which sounded like a fan rubbing against part of plastic or something problem returned. Again i dosconnected the power and connected it back, and the noise stopped. Another few days went by, and just after Friday the 13th
the fridge/freezer died completly. There is no sounds of clicking or anything else whatsoever. I tried leaving it off for some time, no luck. Nothing kicks in. Both fridge and freezer are effected. Can anyone please suggest how to diagnose this problem? Much appreciated. |

Hi,
Ok, then you'll need to check the cold control to make sure it has continuity when its on. Unplug your refrigerator first before ohm testing it with an ohm meter. Or you can jump the wires on it just to test to see if it comes on. Here's the repair manual for your model, it shows you how to access it: http://www.servicematters.com/maytag_library/docs/16010154.pdf Its #3 here: ![]() Here's the cold control assembly for your model: Manufacturer's Number: 61005516 If that tests good, then the problem is likely your defrost board#13 in the parts diagram above. Here's the defrost board for this model - Part#61005988 Manufacturer's Number: 61005988 Jake

Thanks Jake for the info.
I took out the cold control #3 and when testing the Ohms with multi-tester between the red an black connectors it shows 00.3 00.4 Ohms (with the unit out,no power). When i shake it, it rattles a bit too, is that part of it's design? Thanks, Dom |

Hi Dom,
Did you take the wires off of it first before ohm testing it? Also did you turn the thermostat and ohm test it both with it in the on position and off position? You should have continuity(about 0 ohms) in the ON position, and no continuity(meter wont move)in the OFF position. 00.3/00.4 ohms would mean continuity. Quote:

Hello Jake,
> Did you take the wires off of it first before ohm testing it? Yes, i took the cold control unit out and tested it outside without power. There were 3 connectors going to it, red, blue/black on sides and green/yellow going at the botton of it. i tested between red and blue/black with a digital ohm meter which showed 00.3-00.4 with this reading, should i purchase the cold control? the stores are closed today anyway, due to a Family Day holiday so no part replacement today anyways, but what's the next step? my digital reader shows 0.00 with a flashing 1 in front when it's ON and in Ohm setting with connectors not touching. i tested it on a AA battery in Volts and it works fine. > Also did you turn the thermostat and ohm test it both with it in the on position and off position? not sure where the thermostat is? can you be more specific as to how to test this? the rattling is slight, more like a nut washer moving around Thanks |

Thermostat=cold control unit.
![]() Take the wires to it completely off, then turn it OFF then ohm test it, then ON and ohm test it. Jake

Then your cold control unit is fine.
The problem would be your defrost board. Here's the defrost board for this model - Part#61005988 Manufacturer's Number: 61005988 Jake

Hello Jake,
Okay, I can purchase and change the defrost board, and see what happens. I'm just wondering what actually was making the "noisy fan"/ rattling noise 2 times before the fridge died. Is there anything in the freezer part of this unit which would be making this sound, as the noise was coming from the left hand side of the fridge, however it might as well be actually coming from the freezer part, but at the time i have not opened the freezer. (wow, talk about a run-on sentence ![]() Thanks, Dom |

Hello Jake,
You're the man! It was the defrost board. It was actually replaced alrady back in 2005 by my Late father. This fridge is nothing but trouble, the ice maker stopped working few years back too. Anyhow, Thanks a lot Jake for your expert advice. ![]() Dominik |
