Question [FIXED] Maytag dishwasher works intermittently

We have a 2 year old Maytag dishwasher. (model # MDB7751AWW) It was one of the dishwashers maytag shipped out with the wrong size door gasket. The rubber gasket was too thick and wouldn't allow the door to close. After replacing the gasket it worked fine for about a year.

Now it works normally for a period of time and then will not start. Some of the lights on the panel will be lit, but the buttons won't respond. Other times nothing will light up. After a couple days of sitting idle it will then work normally again. This has been going on for about six months.
I've tried turning off power so see if it will re-set itself and that hasn't worked.

Do i have a leak somewhere that shorts the controls and then clears up when it drys out? Is there a short that vibrates open? does the control panel need to be replaced? Please help.

Hi Tommy,

Yes, it sounds like your control panel is bad. I've changed many myself for this same issue.

Here's the one for your model you can order:
Manufacturer's Number: 6-919828

If you purchase parts from our links here and you install them and it doesn't fix the problem, you have a 30 day full refund when you return them.

Thanks Jake. I see other posts where you have recommend replacing both the control board and the control panel. Is that warranted here or should i just try the control panel first?

Yes, its always best to replace both at one time, but lots of people don't want to spend the extra money especially in the recession now, so they try one at a time.

Here's the cheapest price I found for the control board for your model:
Manufacturer's Number: 99003466

99003466

I'd recommend changing both if you can afford it, if not then you can just order the control panel.

Hi Jake, Our dishwasher control panel is not working AGAIN. It lasted about 8 months before it started acting up again. No surprise especially after seeing how many others are having continuing problems with Maytag control panels. I'm going to replace the panel one more time and try protecting the dishwasher with a good quality surge protector. Maybe that will work. If not, we are going to junk the $400 machine and buy something else. And...it won't be a Maytag. I'll keep you posted on how the surge protector works...might be worth a try for others having similar problems. If we get enough people trying this it would give us an idea if a surge protector solves the problem. Thanks. Tom

Yes Tom, thats a good idea to install the surge protector.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

Jake...NEWS FLASH! SOLVED OUR MAYTAG DISHWASHER PROBLEM. After replacing yet another touch panel ( third one) on our now 2 1/2 year old, $400 Maytag, I tore the thing out, trashed it and put in an inexpensive White Westinghouse with mechanical controls and it has been working just fine.
Since the buyout, the Maytag brand has really slipped. We won't ever buy any Maytag appliance again. Thanks agian for your help...just wanted to follow up. Tom
P.S. trying to protect the dishwasher with a surge protector seemed to make no difference.

Yes, the mechanical ones are still the best and most reliable.

Sorry to hear you had another touchpad go bad.
