Default Maytag MSD2656DEW Refrigerator RR Cooling Problems

I have a Maytag MSD2656DEW Reefer and am having issues with airflow to the refridgerator side. The flow seems to be very low but what is coming out is cold. I removed the lower cover in the freezer last nite because the reefer side was not cooling and was at 50 degrees F and getting warmer. The coils were iced up badly so I got my heat gun out and removed all the ice buildup completely. After that was done I reinstalled the cover and turned the unit back on. The reefer side then began to cool. Today when I checked it the temp was at 40 degrees F. The airflow is still very low and not like is was when the unit was new. I checked the plastic flapper (supply to freezer) behind the vegetable drawer and it is not stuck or froze up. There does not seem to be a problem with cooling in the freezer as the temp is 0 Degrees F

My Questions Are:

1. Does the Defrost Control Board affect airflow to the reefer side?
2. I see there is a Auto Control Damper Assembly (I think) that is geared into the refridgerator temperature control arm. Does this affect airflow or it is just for temperature control?
3. Are there (2) fans in the freezer or just (1) The airflow in the freezer appears to be very strong but is not making its way into the reefer fully.

Please Help!

1. Does the Defrost Control Board affect airflow to the reefer side?
Yes, if the evaporator coil was completely frosted up like that, its tells me that its likely the defrost control board(ADC) thats bad. Because of the evaporator coil frosted up like that, doesn't allow proper air circulation through it and up and out to the refrigerator section vent.

Both, but if the evaporator coil is frosted up that restricts are through it. Also make sure that its not clogged with frost/ice itself.

Just the 1 freezer fan above the evaporator coil that pushes the air up and out through your auto-damper into your refrigerator.

Here's the adaptive defrost control board for your model, you can order:
Manufacturer part number 61005988 is RepairClinic item number 948430
61005988

Here's the repair manual for your model:
http://www.servicematters.com/maytag_library/docs/16010154.pdf
Page 2-14 tells you how to replace it.

Here's are main thread on this issue, read it through carefully, its long and detailed:
[FIXED] Maytag Refrigerator Model MSD2756DEB is not cooling properly

Question

Jake,

Thank You!

I have another question if you can answer it for me:

As I stated in my previous post all the ice buildup in the coils was removed completely and the cover reinstalled before the unit was turned back on. The airflow is still low to the reefer side. Another words the restriction of airflow through the coils was removed which in turn should free up the airflow to the reefer side and bring it back to normal correct? Or would the airflow still be low due to a faulty Defrost Control Board?

Thanks again for your help!

Terry

Ok Terry,

The only way to know for sure is to take apart that console and see if the auto-damper is fully opened or not, or clogged with frost/ice.

Here's the auto-damper housing assembly for your model:
Manufacturer's Number: 61005993

61005993

Ok,

How do I remove this? I removed all the screws from the top plate and it is still hung up in there... The wiring harness goes through to the freezer side and I cannot figure out how to release it. I am guessing the entire top panel needs to come out to check this flapper to verify it is open?

Thanks for the help.

In the refrigerator section console assembly Terry, thats mounted inside the refrigerator section on the ceiling, it drops down.

Here's the repair manual for your model:

Page 2-11 tells you how to remove/replace it.

Jake,

Thanks a bunch for the info. I will give it another try today and let you know how it goes.

BTW can you tell me where to get a replacement slide control gear (plastic gear that slides over auto damper control).
