Default [FIXED] Maytag Washer Problem - MAH5500BWW

I have a Maytag washer that is leaving the clothes very wet and in some cases noticably dirty. Upon further investigation it is not doing anything except watting the clothes and making some noise (ie. pump water and clicking relays/locks).

Model: MAH5500BWW (front load)
Serial: C8404649JP

I have done the following trying to troubleshoot the problem and learn more:

What: Monitored tub/belt assembly during a normal cycle
Result: Motor starts to turn tub but never completes more than half a revolution each time. The tub then rolls back to its orginal position. It tries this every few seconds.

What: Quick Spin Test
Result: Locked the door and then same as above.

What: Motor Control Board Test (with JP4 disconnected)
Result: Tub turns at roughly 50RPM.

What: Pin Voltage on Motor Control Board (JP4)
Result: P1 <-> P2 - 0 volts. (???)
Result: P1 <-> P3 - 24 volts.

What: Filled tub with a bucket of water and started Spin Cycle.
Result: Tub drained in about 20 seconds but it sounded like the pump continued to run for the next minutes. During that time the tub occasionally jerked about half a revolution every 30 seconds or so.

What: Board Input Tests
Result: Low Water Level - _O
Result: High Water Level - _O
Result: Unbalanced Circiut - uO
Result: Vibration Signal - 0

What: Board Output Tests
Results: All tested as expected with the expection of the Motor Control test. This did nothing after locking the door (with JP4 connected).

Diagnostic Codes: Nothing recent. Last code received was 16 (high speed not achieved due to high motor torque) over 30 cycles ago.

This unit is only two years old and I don't want to start changing parts blindly to see what fixes it. Nor could I afford to. I don't know where to go from here.

ANY suggestions or thoughts are extremely appreciated!!!

Ok,

Take the belt off and run it, error code 16 says it could be spinner shaft also, so if the motor runs with the belt off we can eliminate your spinner shaft.

Let me know what happens.

I tried running a spin cycle with the belt off this morning and the results were the same. The motor shaft would turn a little, then stop, and repeat every 15 to 30 seconds for the entire time of the spin cycle.

Again, that error was from over 30 cycles ago which means it happened several months ago. I was aware of any problems at that time and it has certainly worked since until a couple of days ago. There is nothing more recent in the diagnostic log.

Nope, thats about it, does the motor shaft seem hard to turn? Should turn fairly easily.

I can turn the shaft on the motor easily with two fingers. A spin test with JP4 disconnected results in the motor spinning the tub at about 50RPM as expected.

Will the washer log repeat errors in the log?

Thats a good question, but I don't if it will or not.

Its pointing more towards your main control board as being the issue.

Here's the main control board for your model you can order:
Manufacturer part number 22004488 is RepairClinic item number 1184686
22004488

We have a special program here, all parts you order from our links we post are returnable within 30 days for a FULL refund if they don't fix the problem.

Thanks, I was guessing it was either the main control board or the motor control board but without prior experience it would have been a shot in the dark. With your experience and know that I can return the part if that doesn't fix things I feel a lot better.

I ordered the part yesterday and fedex tracking shows it should be here within the next few hours. I'll immediately put it in and update this thread with the results.

Angry

Falso hopes.. I put the new main conrol board in today and ran a spin test before putting the front and back on. I was excited what it gradually spun up and hit A0 speed. I put the front and back on and started a load of clothes (only have about 8 loads to do) and had dinner. Came back and it the pump was just humming and the machine didn't seem to be doing much else. The timer counted down to under 5 minutes and then popped back to 8 minutes. I watched it for atleast 10 minutes straight and it never changed, still saying 8 minutes. I finally stopped the load and tried another spin test and it is back to not turning the tub even once. Ideas?

Could a counter have been reset by putting in the new board so it worked for a few minutes and then returned to a failed state?

Could something be shorting out the main control board and now I have two failed boards?

Cool

Ahah... if I give the tub drive pully a little push while motor is jerking it suddenly takes off and starts spinning. Would you say this is a motor problem?

I tested restistance on the motor terminals and showed no circuit between pin #1 and pin #6 as the wiring schematic shows. Interesting that the motor will turn when doing a motor control test with JP4 on the "motor control board" disconnected but only sputters like it wants to but can't when JP4 is connected. What are you thoughts?

Yes, thats what I was going by as well, thats why I didn't think it was the motor, but now it does sound like the motor is bad.

Here's the one for your model you can order:
Manufacturer part#12002039 is RepairClinic item#949491

You can return that control board for a full refund.
