Default not cooling msd2732grw

I read the threads about cooling issues with maytag refrigerators. So I removed the rear panel and found some frost on tube going into evap coil, but the rest of the coil was dry, no frost at all. The freezer makes ice but ice cream is soft, it also never stops running. The fridge seam to work ok, no thermometer to test. The fan works in the freezer and at the condenser. I manually turned the defost timer till the fridge stop running and later it turn on by itself, so I think thats working. The compressor was replaced about 1 1/2 years ago.
Thanks for any advise, John

Hi John,

How old is this refrigerator? If you don't know post the serial# and I can tell you.

It sounds like you have a small freon refrigerant leak in the sealed system from when the tech. replaced the compressor, causing ALL the evaporator coils in your freezer not to have frost on them.

Ok, its a 2003 model. So unfortunately, your 5 yr. compressor warranty is over.

Unless you want to have a tech. come out to see if they find a freon leak, or you could possibly look for yourself by pulling your refrigerator out from the wall and taking the lower back access panel off and get a flashlight and look for oily leaks on the compressor tubing connections.

I had a tech come out today, did'nt see a leak. He had to add a valve to recharge system. After recharge fridge working. He thinks it maybe an evaporator coil leaking, is that common. Thanks for your advise.

No, its not common for the evaporator coil in the freezer to leak, but can happen.

Usually the tech. would have to find the leak and repair it, then re-charge it. So the tech. adding a valve to recharge it won't fix it permanently until the leak is repaired.
