Question Maytag MBB2254GES not cooling, buzzing from relay on compressor

Hi all,

I have a 6 yr old Maytag refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom which has stopped cooling.
It started intermittingly for a few hours at a time and now it's not cooling at all, neither the refrigerator nor the freezer.
When I plug it in I hear buzzing from the relay attached to the compressor. (I took off the rear access cover)
The buzzing will start then click off, a few minutes later it will do it again, than again.
Could the compressor be shot or maybe just the relay?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Robert

Hi Robert,

On these models I find that when it does this is more likely to be your compressor thats bad rather than the start relay, I always ohm the start relay(refrigerator unplugged) for continuity just to make sure. If you get 0-1 ohms on the start relay, then its fine and its the compressor for sure.

If your compressor is bad, you have a 5 yr. parts & labor warranty on it, but its already run out if yours is 6 yrs. old now. So it would be time to go refrigerator shopping, as to have a compressor installed is about $600.

Here's the start relay for your model, just in case its bad:
Manufacturer part#12555902 is RepairClinic item#821744

If it doesn't fix the problem, they give you 30 days to return it for a full refund.
