Suddenly stopped making ice. I've tested the ice maker unit and it appears to be functioning properly and going through it's cycle just fine -- no water is making it into the tray, however.

The fill tube at the back appears to be frozen, so I tried gently thawing it with a hair dryer, but still not getting water flow.

What should I look at next?

Hi,

You need to make 100% sure that your ice maker fill tube in the back of your refrigerator isn't still frozen, I've had a few fool me too after I thought it was unclogged on some of my service calls on these.

On some models you can pull your fill tube out from the back of your refrigerator and blow through it.

You may need to remove your ice maker to get better access to it from inside the freezer too.

I didn't want to get too 'aggressive' with the hair dryer at the risk of melting something. I'll try pulling the tube out of the back of the fridge tonight.

I looked at removing the ice maker unit -- appears to be one screw attaching to the wall on the under side and two clips on the top side. I couldn't see how to easily release the clips -- they seemed pretty flimsy and I didn't' want to damage anything. Any tips on removing the ice maker unit?

For removing the ice maker:
You would need to push-up a little then out to release it from the clips, then you would have 1 screw on the bottom, then unsnap the electrical connector to it.

I removed the ice maker this morning -- fill tube frozen solid. Managed to get a 1" chunk of ice out, but the rest is still solid. Tried pulling the tube away from the back of the freezer wall but it didn't' appear to want to budge. I'll try to soften it up a bit tonight with a hair dryer to see if I can clear the tube.

Is the fill tube freezing up a 'normal' thing? Haven't adjusted the freezer temp in several years.

Hmmm. In answering my own question: Looks like a frozen fill tube can be caused by a leaky valve:

Something to look into. I'll see how things look once I get the fill tube defrosted.....

Yes, the fill tube can freeze from a leaky water valves.

Sorry for taking a bit to follow-up. We're making ice cubes again. Used a hair dryer, dental pick and long, thin screwdriver to clear the ice from the fill tube.

Since low water pressure could cause a freeze-up, I went ahead and replaced the water filter in the fridge (needed to be replaced anyway). Everything is working well now -- I'll keep an eye on it -- if it starts to freeze up again -- I'll swap out the fill valve.

Ended up having to replace the ice maker unit -- the aluminum cube mold was badly corroded. First unit I received was damaged in shipping, blah, blah, blah -- the folks at appliancepartspros.com took care of it quickly though.
