Default Maytag Model A207 not cycling through wash stages

i have a pretty old maytag A207 model series (i looked for more specific information on the unit but didn't see any) and recently the rotary control dial has stopped automatically cycling through the wash stages (wash, rinse, damp dry). instead, i have to manually rotate the dial through the stages when it seems that enough time has passed. obviously, this isn't good.

the unit works fine otherwise, and i'm hoping this is a reasonably straightforward repair, if not for me, then for a repairperson.

can anyone give me an idea of how easy this is to fix?

thanks.
