[FIXED] Maytag Dryer Won't turn off
My Maytag Model MDE4000AYW, serial number 31435872YW won't turn off any longer. When the dial gets to the end of the cycle, it will continue to turn and the dryer remains on. We caught it once after the dial had made almost a full 360 degree turn. In addition, the dryer doesn't chime when it crosses the end cycle position.
The dryer will stop running when the door is open but if you put your ear next to the dial you can hear it clicking and it is still moving.
It does this same thing no matter what mode it is in. I tried it in timed-dry and it still continues past the 0 point.
Any ideas what might be wrong?
When they talk about a dryer timer is that part of the physical switch dial or is that a separate component?
Can you get to all of that without taking the front door/panel off?
Thanks,
Don

Hi Don,
Please double check your model#, I can't pull-up any information on that one.
Yes, it sounds like a bad timer.
The dryer will stop running when the door is open
If you close the dryer door does it start by-itself without you pushing the start button?
Yes, the timer can be changed just from the top console, no need to remove any other panels.

The model should be "MDE4000AYW" I originally read it off the back with a mirror.
I had the wife do the test for you. When you open the door the dryer stops. When you close the door, you have to hit the start button for it to start again.
Does it still sound like the timer?
I took the cover off the dial and was hoping to find a screw. Instead it was just the end of a shaft. How do I remove the dial. Is there a diagram that shows how to remove the timer?
Thanks,
Don

Sounds good Don.
Remember to unplug or turn the breaker off to your dryer first before opening it up.
Keep us posted.

Jake,
It's fixed!
I got the timer today and replaced the existing one. I must admit, as appliance repairs go, this one was pretty simple.
The only rub was one of the connectors got bent removing it and I had a little trouble getting it back onto the post of the new timer.
Including cleaning the lint/dust out of the inside of the top panel the entire job took about 20 minutes.
Thanks again for your help.
Now that I am on a roll I am going to post about a problem that I am having with my Jenn-Air oven. Please check it out.
Thanks,
Don
