Default Maytag MDE dryer timer not advancing

    Model Number: MDE9206AYW
    Brand: Maytag
    Age: More than 10 years

I have a Maytag MDE9206AYW dryer that stopped working last week - low hum and tumbler not turning. After taking the front panel off and doing some basic troubleshooting I didn't find anything obvious. I started it up no problem without the tumbler in so I re-installed the tumbler and belt and it started up fine. After about a half hour I noticed that the timer control had not advanced when set to Auto cycle. However, it does operate properly when using the timed dry cycle setting.

I assume this must be related to the cycling thermostat or timer motor?

Yesterday, the dryer would not start again with same symptoms - low hum from the motor and tumbler not engaging. From other posts this sounds like a classic case of a motor on its way out. I did ohm out the windings and the start winding is 2ohms instead of the specified 3 ohms so I suppose this could indicate a winding going bad. All other tests looked good.

Before I lay down the cash for parts does this sound like I'm on the right track?
Also, does the switch come with the motor or should I replace that at the same time

Ok, for the timer not moving in auto-dry, First clean the sensor bars that are located in the dryer with rubbing alcohol, a coating can build-up on them overtime and cause this issue.

Yes, you would need a new motor. I will need the serial# of your dryer as they make 2 different motors for this model.

    Jake,

    Thanks for the quick reply.
When you say OK for the timer not advancing do you mean that the timer itself is OK? I cannot find the sensor bars you mention - where are they located?

The serial number for my unit is 13614751UW.
Do you recommend replacing the motor switch at the same time as the motor or is there no need to?

Also, is there an easier way to install the motor than taking the whole unit apart. I think I will order a new belt while I'm in the process of repairing the dryer.

    Thanks again for your help.

Sorry forgot the comma after the Ok.

Ok, looks like your model doesn't have the 2 metal sensor bars.

In that case, you would need the cycling thermostat then to fix the auto-dry issue(the cycling thermostat is located on the front of your blower wheel housing):
Manufacturer part number 307249 is RepairClinic item number 484290

Here is the motor for your model you can order:
Manufacturer part number 33002478 is RepairClinic item number 776953

Here's how to access your motor:
Maytag dryers, how to take apart my Maytag dryer, L shaped door

Here's the repair manual for your model:

The motor removal and replacement is on Page 7-4 you can print out.

    Jake,

Looks great, thanks for the info and the links to the parts. I'm sure I'll be up and running as soon as I get the chance to dive back into it!

    Thanks again.
