Maytag Performa Washer Model # PAVT244AWW Started making noises like bearings or belts and then stopped before the first rinse cycle. Burning smell started so I unplugged it. The machine was set on the oversize setting when this happened. I did not try to restart it due to the burning smell. Any suggestions?

Tilt the washer back and take the belt off underneath it, then turn all 3 pulleys both ways, and see if they all turn freely, possibly your water pump bearing went out, most common to happen on this model.
Here's the water pump for your model:
Drain pump assembly. *Redesigned - no mounting plate - pump mounts directly to base of the washer.
Manufacturer part number 35-6780 is RepairClinic item number 1480294
