Default Intermittent buzzing Maytag

My 1 1/2 year old Maytag PTB1953GRQ refrigerator maintains temperature in both compartments, but occasionally makes a loud 60 hz buzz at 2 minute intervals. I am speculating that this may be the compressor attempting to start, but failing. Eventually there will be a compressor start, but I don't know if that is just a coincidence or confirmation of my suspicion. Most compressor starts are not preceeded by this buzz as far as I have been able to tell, but I don't exactly sit there listening to it.

Hi,

Do you have a Ice Maker installed in it? Do you have the water line hooked up to the refrigerator? The water inlet valve will cause a buzz sound if the ice maker is on with no water going to it.

If your ice maker is working fine, then its possible your relay/overload on the compressor is faulty.

Hi, our Maytag is doing the EXACT same thing. It's a Model: MSD2756GEW.
It is buzzing VERY loudly, followed by a relay click. We have the ice maker, and the water is hooked up to it, but we turned the ice maker off (moved the lever up).

What is the problem, and is this a fire hazard?

Thank you in advance!!

-Jeff

Yep, it's coming from the compressor area. The relay on the compressor clicks, it buzzes for about 5 seconds, then clicks again and stops for 2 minutes.

Yea, it sounds like the relay/overload part is faulty, but you need to ohm it for continuity with a ohm meter.

There is a chance it could be your compressor going out, or starting to lock-up on you.

I could give you the part# for both, but i would need the first 2 numbers of your serial# to get you the correct part.

Is your refrigerator cooling ok still?

Had the Maytag man come and look at it yesterday. Said the compressor is bad. It's only 2 years old, and the compressor is covered under a 5 year warranty, so I should be alright. Thanks for your help
