Default Maytag MBB2254GEW Refrigerator Clicking/Buzzing Problem

    Model Number: MBB2254GEW
    Brand: Maytag
    Age: 6-10 years

I have the somewhat typical problem of a clicking noise followed by a buzzing noise for about 19 seconds, followed by another clicking noise, then after about 2.5 minutes the cycle repeats. I know that this normally means the compressor is bad, but the strange thing is that both the fridge/freezer seem to be cool/cold. Is there anything else that I can try? From what I understand, if it is in fact the compressor, it effectively means that we need to throw away our 9-yr-old fridge, correct? We really like it and would love to avoid that. We have already cleaned behind our fridge and the intake grill for the compressor, but the clicking/buzzing cycle continues even though the food seems fine.

    Thank you,
    Ben

Does the clicking and buzzing noise sound like it's coming from the compressor? It may just be the relay/overload that's going out. Try taking it off the compressor and shake it. If it makes a rattling noise it's probably bad. Here's the one for your machine:

Thanks for the prompt reply! I also should've mentioned that I can get the fridge back to a fairly normal state by unplugging it for about 45 minutes to let it cool (I assume) and when I plug it back in, it seems fine again. It has then gone for a couple of weeks before starting up the buzzing/clicking cycles again. I ordered the relay/overload and hopefully that will do the trick. I am hoping that the replacement process will be pretty self-explanatory. If not and you happen to have a link for installation instructions, that would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

I'm guessing you didn't bother to check the one thats on there now? It's located on the side of the compressor and pulls straight off. There might be a thin wire strap holding it on. Just remove it. Look closely at the back wall of the freezer section. Is there any frost on it anywhere?

    Default Back again

I am writing about the same fridge that I wrote about back in August! Back then we did check the relay, found a rattle in it and replaced it. The buzzing/clicking has unfortunately continued in a sporadic fashion. For the most part the refrigerator & freezer are able to maintain reasonable temperatures, but not always. Once a week or so I need to unplug the unit for 45 minutes and that usually helps it to go for a number of days without the clicking/buzzing. It is way past due, however, for me to resolve this. Is there anything else that is worth checking or would you advise to buy a new refrigerator? Thank you.

If you replaced the relay/overload and it's still having issues, you might have a bad compressor.
