Default Maytag Performa Refrigerator not cooling

    Model Number: PBF2253HEW
    Brand: Maytag
    Age: 6-10 years

    Hello,
My Maytag Performa Refrigerator, with Bottom Freezer, Model PBF2253HEW is not cooling. I placed thermometers in both the Freezer and Refrigerator. The freezer is at 0degF and the Refrigerator is at 68degF. This unit is about 6-7 years old. There is at min 2" clearence all around. The condenser coils underneather were and are clean. I pulled out the unit to check the condenser fan and it is running and the fan and grill are clean.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

Hello sir and thank you for responding. I will have to specifically check this when I get back home. I do not recall noticing any frost there, but then I was not looking for that either. I am at work right now and it will be about 3 hours before I can check this and get back to you. I have a spare refrigerator I placed my perishables into. The spare is 40+ years old and still works great. Go figure.

If there's a defrost issue the evaporator becomes blocked with frost or ice and the fan can't circulate the air across the coils and into the fresh food section. You may only see a small line of frost across the back wall and you may need to feel with your hand. It's not always noticeable until you remove the evaporator cover (back wall).

10-4 Thank you. I will check this when I get there. I do have an observation I made though, that may be associated with this. Being this is a bottom freezer unit, in the top rear wall of the refrigerator, inside, there is a grill with an access panel in the grill. I opened this to see inside. I was just curious. I thought there should be air flow either into the refrig or out from the refrig through this. I could not feel any airflow. There is an actuator controlled / spring loaded door in this access and it was open. When i adjusted the temperature control settings the actuator would move the door.
Should there be airflow through this?

I found this service flash. See if it pertains to your model by checking the serial number. This might be the problem.

    Thank you Mr. Burton,
I have checked and yes there is a frost line, on the back wall of the inside of the freezer. Also, the TB does list the model refrigerator I have. I am not sure about this date code unless it might be the last 2 numbers of the refrigerator serial number. If this be the case the last 2 digits is GT. Just the same I think it would be worth looking at the motor date code. Now i have to determine if I need to access this from inside the refrig or by taking off the back panel.

OK, at this point lets assume the damper is still working correctly because you most likely have a defrost problem. Lets tackle that first and then if needed we'll check the damper. Remove the back wall of the freezer and use a meter set on ohms/continuity to check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. It's best to check the defrost thermostat while the frost and ice is still there. It needs to be below 40*F to read closed. If they both check good, the control board will be the faulty part. If you defrost the evaporator (after checking the defrost thermostat) use a hair dryer. Once all the frost and ice is out, you can plug it back in and it should work OK until you replace the faulty part. It usually takes a week to build up that much frost to stop the cooling again.

Thank you. Will this defrost heater and and defrost thermostat be readily obvious? If it is the control board, can I purchase this component through you? Or what would you recommend? My work requires that I travel frequently and i will have to go across country again in a couple of days for about 2 weeks.

Here is all three components. Once you defrost it, if you don't get the part installed before you leave, it should be OK until you get back. You'll probably have to defrost it again when you replace the part.
