Maytag mfd2560hes not cooling, fan turns, constant clicking noise
Brand:
Maytag
Age:
6-10 years
Woke up this morning and the temp inside the refrigerator was 70 degrees. The freezer section is still plenty cold. The appliance is a Maytag mfd2560hes, french door style, freezer on the bottom.
Symptoms... First thing I noticed was that the fan wasn't running and there was a click click click sound coming from the back. It clicked for maybe 10-30s? I pulled the fridge out and removed the back panel, but it seems to be coming from above the removable panel on the left side (if you are looking at the back of the fridge). I do know that while I was down looking at the dust balls, the fan did come on and run with no problem for a bit. I checked the copper coils coming out of the compressor, and the seemed pretty clean.
Any help would be appreciated.

The clicking you heard was probably the overload on the compressor. Remove it and shake it to see if it rattles. Look on the compressor for a name like Embraco.

Please forgive my ignorance when describing this. I opened the black panel on the back of the fridge and detached the stuff that was attached to the compressor. There was a black piece that had 2 blades on it. I took that off and shook it and there was no noise. Then, I disconnected the wire harness and pulled off a white block. I shook it and it had a tiny rattle, like maybe the metal that the compressor posts went into giggling a little.
Tonight I mentioned all of this to my wife, and she said she hadn't heard any of the clicking since early this morning.
Also, there was no name on the compressor, but it had a sticker with a blue indian head on it with two sets of numbers. On top is TP141-AR-229-B8, and on bottom is TPG1370YXA.

Last thing before I buy this part... I don't think I mentioned that the freezer is unaffected. It is still cooling with seemingly no issues. Could that part still be the issue?

Take the temperature of the freezer and see what you get. Should be 0.

Still hearing the clicking sound? Set both controls at midway then take a temperature reading. Fresh Food should be around 38 and freezer should be around 0

I remember hearing the clicking sound this morning... went on for a few minutes before stopping. The fridge is still at room temperature. I found a local appliance part store that had that part, so I picked one up at lunch. I will replace it tonight and let you know how it goes.
We've been having an issue with the ice maker where we weren't getting any ice and I could feel liquid in the ice cube trays. That was maybe a month ago? I temped the freezer then at about 16 degrees, so I moved it from 5 to 6. That got the ice maker going, but now I am thinking that might have been an early warning sign?
Thank you for your help thus far!

No dice. I replaced that part this evening. It's been an hour and a half or so, and it is still 70 degrees in the fridge. What else could it be?
