A couple things, 1- the freezer fan, do you hear it running when you open your freezer door?

2- your condenser fan, in the back of the refrig. near the compressor, those 2 fans should be running when the compressor is on.

Well, unless the defrost timer was making a humming or ticking sound and thats the source of the quietness, then yes its possible that has got stuck or burned out.

Do you notice any frost build up on the freezer bottom or back panel?
