Bull in China Shop on Maytag MSD245GR Ice Maker
Brand:
Maytag
Age:
More than 10 years
A week or so ago i hooked back up the water line to this fridge. It had been disconnected when the house was re-plumbed with PEX.
All was working great until a couple days ago, when we could no longer get ice out of the icemaker. Had a look at it tonight and there were large chunks of ice frozen around the auger, and ice build up in back of the ice maker and water drops freezing all underneath it.
I removed the screw on the icemaker tray and was barely able to get it out. In my haste, i neglected to unplug the icemaker and yanked out a few wires. I managed to figure out where all of the wires went except for the one purple wire that comes from the plug.
Would anyone know where the heck that wire goes? Also what might cause the icemaker to freeze up like this?
Thanks

Looking at the wiring diagram I don't see a violet or purple wire. Black, Tan, and White are the only ones I see. Look inside the fill tube and see if there's any ice. If there is, you'll need to replace the water valve. Can you recheck your model number? Nothing comes up with that one. : Help Me Find My Model Number - RepairClinic.com

Ok i left out a number in the model number. Its MSD2454GR sorry. And yes the fill tube is frozen solid or at least the slot in the top of it is frozen from the back of the freezer along the entire length of the slot. Heres a pic of the back of the ice maker. The wire colors are Green w/Yellow stripe, Orange, White and Purple.

Is that wire soldered onto the cube solenoid? I dont see anywhere on the solenoid that looks like the wire was connected or soldered to it.
Thanks for the links to the 2 valves. Do i need both?

No, there should be two wires connected to the solenoid by spade connectors. The female spade from the wire and male spade from the solenoid are probably in the bottom of the freezer somewhere

Yes, the water filter valve has probably been leaking for a while but not noticeable because it stops at the secondary water valve and had no where to go until the secondary valve developed a leak. You can probably get away with just replacing the secondary valve, however I wouldn't recommend it. The isolation or water filter valve has been changed because of the problems it has putting too much pressure on the filter and secondary valve. Looks like you'll also need the cube solenoid:

Not sure how i missed it, but the spade is still attached to the solenoid with no wire going to it. I may need to pick up a right angled spade if i cant get a straight one to fit in there.
I take it no need for the cube solenoid if the male spade is still in tack and i can get things wired back up O.K.

Didnt want to start a new thread, so i figured id ask in this one. I bought the 2 valves and just got around to putting them in today. Water works from the dispenser, but no ice. The tube feeding the ice maker was clear, but i did not defrost the freezer after installing the valves. The tube was frozen solid when i first had the problem.
The auger works, so im assuming the wiring is all set.
Should i have to defrost the freezer after installing the valves? I guess one of the new valves could be faulty not allowing water to the ice maker. Ill have to dig into that in the morning.
Any other suggestions are welcomed.

I need your model number to look it up. Read it from the tag on the machine: Help Me Find My Model Number - RepairClinic.com No defrosting necessary on a frost free refrigerator. The frozen water in the fill tube would suggest the water valve was the problem. Give the ice maker 24 hours to wake up.
