Maytag Refrigerator Makes a loud humming/buzzing sound
Brand:
Maytag
Age:
1-5 years
Hi All,
I am hoping I can get some pointers on a loud humming my Maytag is making. It started about two weeks ago, when the freezer was left open over night and everything defrosted (it's a bottom freezer). I noticed the fridge started to make a loud humming sound. I didn't think much of it, but it started to get on my nervous because I didn't remember the fridge being that loud. I started to try and trouble shoot the potential issue, but I haven't had much luck. I checked the compressor and the only thing I noticed is it is hot to the touch. Not sure if that is normal. The fan next to the compressor is working fine.
When behind the fridge, I can tell the humming is coming from the bottom of the fridge, but more a quarter of the way up from the bottom. This leads me to believe it might be the evaporator fan. But I am not sure what is wrong with it and I am not sure how to gain access to the fan. I don't see away to remove the back of the fridge. I did notice some screws holding a plate in the back of the freezer and contemplated removing that. When I pushed the plate I can hear a cracking sound. I've read online that I might be experiencing ice build up and the fan is rubbing against it.
Any suggestions of my next course of action or how to access the evaporator fan?
Its worth noting, besides the loud humming, the fridge is working fine.
Thanks in advance
Brian

Hi,
Inside back wall in the freezer section comes off to access the fan....#4 and #1...

...grill should unsnap off towards you, wall has screws.
Ice/frost on the fan blade is possible from the door being left open.
If needed:
Motor, freezer (evaporator) fan Manufacturer Number W10128551
Fan blade for evaporator fan motor Manufacturer Number 2169142

when taking the wall off, do I need to take the ice maker out? or can that stay in?

ya, it seems like it is going to be a big pain. I haven't started this "project" yet. Is there any harm to waiting? Especially if it is ice build up? Would defrosting the fridge help out?

Damaging something else or something else further.
Would defrosting the fridge help out?
An over night with the doors open might be a good idea.

I noticed that I am getting a rattling sound coming from #1, in the diagram. I jammed a piece of paper between the wall and #1. That seemed to help. However I accidentally pushed the wad of paper to far and I believe it fell behind the opening that part #1 is guarding. Do I have to be concerned about that paper falling behind the freezer wall? Like landing on coils and potentially causing a fire? What is part #1

Fan grill cover.
Yes should be checked to make sure the paper isn't going to get jammed in the fan motor blade....but no fire issues will result.

Thanks Jeff. I appreciate the help. Does the fan cover pop off or do I need to remove the entire back wall?

Should come off all on it's own...
