Default Maytag MSD2756GE Not Defrosting

Maytag (purchased Nov. 2001) side-by-side MSD2756GE not defrosting it seems. Several weeks ago compressor began running for long period, but refrigerator section not cooling to proper temperature. This started a couple of days after a power outage, so turned off and let sit for 30 minutes. Had some frost near opening at top of freezer section, so used hair dryer to melt/evaporate. Checked drain plug and was clear, but almost no water in pan. Worked OK for a couple of weeks, then not keeping cold again. Opened panel at rear of freezer, found lots of frost and ice on evaporator. Shut down and used hair dryer to melt ice. Started refrigerator and went to proper temps within 90 minutes. That was March 8. Frost building up again (March 18), but refrigerator/freezer still in proper temperature ranges. Yesterday, took of rear panel again and left small bowl under frost covered evaporator. Checked after 24 hours and found no water/ice in bowl. Assume defroster not operating. Assume it is either thermostat, heater element or adaptive defrost board. What now?

thanks

Steve

Hi,

Its more than likely the defrost board, as these have been failing left and right the past few years.

This thread talks all about it:

Hi Jake,

thanks for the info. I have order a defrost board. I had to use the hair dryer trick this morning, because of the frost build-up on the evaporator. I turned the refrigerator on again and it started cooling, but now it stopped and just the lights work. Both sides are warming up.

thanks

Steve

Sounds like that relay on the defrost board is shot, that new defrost board should resolve it. Till you get it, you can try tapping on the bottom of the defrost housing board assembly which is located in the back right side under the top console with the 2 1/4" screws mounted to it on the bottom, to see if it will start and stay running.

Jake, I unplugged the appliance and then plugged it back and then turned the refrigerator on and it started working again. I'll try tapping on the underside of the defrost board, if it happens again. Hopefully, I'll get the board soon.

thanks
