Default Icemaker Splashing Water All Over Freezer

Boy, am I glad to find this website! First post for me. I did a search through the Maytag refrigeration section, but didn't quite find what I was looking for. I figured I'd ask directly with my info.

We've got an MSD2756GE side-by-side model, purchased new in May of '01. This is a recurring problem that we've just kind of lived with for a while, but have recently gotten tired of cleaning it up. Right now I have the icemaker disconnected, and the wife is getting tired of it.

Occasionally, water gets splashed all over the freezer and makes a nice, North Pole kind of scene. It seems like perhaps the icemaker doesn't fully eject the ice cubes, and then when the next shot of water comes along, it just splashes everywhere. However, I'm not sure if the ice discharge is a cause, or a result of the problem. I've heard and read about the water pressure factor. We seem to have good water pressure. Not low, but perhaps a bit high. We keep the freezer at 0 degrees F.

When it happens, we have to move everything out of the freezer, turn it off, and let it defrost. (It defrosts/dries faster with a box fan blowing in it). I have removed the icemaker, and made sure the trays were free of water/ice/debris, and turned it back on and started over. Sometimes it will be okay for 4 months, sometimes 1 week.

Is there a known or a possible problem with these? Is it the icemaker, or the water filling system? Could it be our water pressure or the freezer temperature? Somebody please educate me. It's driving my wife crazy, which is a very... bad ... thing...

We've had the defrost board replaced, and I've replaced a water valve myself. The old one developed a hairline split in it, and they've upgraded the part. The problem was occuring before these repairs, as well as after. I hate to pay for a service call for something that I could fix myself with a little bit of knowledge from the experts here. (Yes, I'm groveling!)

Rich

Hi,

It sounds like your ice maker is giving you this problem, I have replaced a few of these in the last 5 years because of this issue.

Here is the one for your model:

Thank you for the prompt reply. After work, I'll pull mine out and compare the part as best I can with the picture, and buy it if it looks right. It's 4:55 am right now, and everything is a little fuzzy right now.

I'll just have to swap out the missing parts as needed.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Rich

Hey Jake, I got the part yesterday. Swapping of parts and installation into freezer was a piece of cake. It's all pretty self-explanatory. I'm keeping my fingers crossed... so far, so good.

Thanks again!

if it occurs again, check the fill tube for freezing. Maytag revised that part w/ a slotted type fill tube.
