Default Maytag - clicking from compressor, no cooling

I was away on vacation and my refrigerator failed . The person I left the keys with threw away all the stuff for me.

I tried plugging the refrigerator back and the fan comes on. I can hear a clicking sound and 10-15 seconds later another clicking sound. This keeps happening every few minutes.

I called a mechanic he asked me to leave the refrigerator on. When he came by, he touched the compressor which was warm to the touch and looked inside the refrigerator and told me the compressor is broken and that I should get a new refrigerator.

Is the clicking sound, a warm compressor an a lack of cooling provide conclusive evidence that the compressor is busted?

Any advice on this matter would be greatly aprreciated.

Thanks

Thanks Jeff for the link.

I pulled out the relay and found a black terminal. I assume it was better to have seen the burnt relay since there is some hope for the compressor? If the relay was burnt why was the compressor still warm.

I am hoping to do some more diagnostics. I will measure the resistance between the 3 terminals. Is there anything else I should do to check if the compressor is finished or not?

The refrigerator is a Maytag Performa PTB19BBGRW. Does this refrigerator have a capacitor?

This is great website.

Thanks

Sometimes yes.

Compressor is still trying to go.....but cannot.

An appliance tech would often run a test cord on the compressor only and run it to test for amp draw and such.....probably easier for you to just get another overload and relay and try it.

No start cap but will have a run capacitor.

The compressor is a EMBRACO EGU 70 HLC. I measured the resistance between the 3 compressor posts. The 3 compressor posts were in a inverted triangle formation. The resistance between the top 2 posts were 7.6 ohms. The resistance between the top left post and the bottom post was 4.1 ohms and the resistance between the top right post and the bottom post was 3.9 ohms. Does this mean much?

I have ordered the relay unit. It will take a week to get here. I am having problems removing the cables from the relay unit. I assume it is better to cut the cables and recrimp it?

Thanks
