Angry Maytag mah3000aww will not turn off

Three days ago my Maytag3000aww quit spinning. From a web search based on the symptoms, I determined that R11 resistor on the main board and the triac that it controls were the likely culprits. Since I am somewhat handy in electronics, it was no challenge to replace these ($0.20 for the resistor and $0.75 for the triac).

Well, it worked. The washer now spins like it is supposed to and the door lock wax motor works again.

However, now the washer will not turn off when it reaches the 'off' position on the timer. The problem is not the timer because I checked the circuit and it does open the circuit like it is supposed to. To turn it off I have to depress the 'start/stop' button. This is a nuisance because I cannot leave the machine to do its thing; I have to hang around to turn it off - if I don't, it just continues doing a 'pretend wash' (tumbling with no water).

Any suggestions? Right now I am stumped.

Hi,

Unfortunately, when you just start replacing separate parts on the control board, rather than other things that made it go bad on the control board, can make it either not work correctly or another problem arises.

Part#12001725 Machine control board kit, MAH3000 prior to series 17. *Burned resistor on board indicates another problem within the machine

Part#22002988 Machine control board kit, MAH3000 series 17 & after. *Burned resistor on board indicates another problem within the machine

The series# is the first 2 digits in your serial#

Thats why I never recommend just changing parts on the control board, I know its much cheaper to do, but other things can happen that didn't before, or the resistor can still burn out down the road again.

I know some may disagree with me, but thats just my opinion.

Hopefully another tech. or member can help you out.

Jake

Did you replace the wax motor? I am not an expert but I just went through the whole procedure (R11, Triac, and the Wax Motor replacement) and it worked for me. I believe the wax motor is some sort of timer device that releases the door lock after the end of the cycle. It is recommended that you should also replace the wax motor as part of this repair. Note that the triac that you replaced should be a different part that carries higher voltage rating. Website below has a lot of info, maybe overkills but might help you out.

Read section with "Mike's Info" heading, has some good info on the wax motor.

Default Still won't turn off

Hogger,
I have now replaced everythihg: wax motor, the other triacs and transistors that many recommend and I inserted a fuse so that if the wax motor shorts again it will blow the fuse rather than blow the main board.

Everything works except for the same problem: it will not turn off after the spin is finished. So, the door remains locked. The work around is to push the 'start/stop' button to turn it off. This works every time After the on light goes out, the was motor releases the lock in about three minutes.

I replaced the Q2 transistor because one article stated that this was the driver for the lock but it made no difference. While I was at it, I replaced its complement, Q7.

The problem is that so long as the machine is on, the wax motor does not disengage. The machine continues to tumble every minute and this goes on indefinitely until the start/stop switch is pushed.

To me it seems like a timer problem. The timer is not sending some signal to turn off the machine but I checked it and it works. So, I guess that it is an electronic problem - I guess that when the timer shuts off, some transistor is not getting the signal to shut off. However, I have gone throught the schematic a dozen times and I cannot figure out what part that might be.

Any ideas?

Default Machine will not shut off

Wid,
I guess from your post, you have the same problem. Am I right?

In any case, I still have the same problem. Every now and then I review the schematic but I have not been able to spot anything that might be the problem.

If you have any luck, please let me know.
