I have a Maytag model LAT top loading washing machine and I am having a problem with insufficientagitation. It agitates, but the clothes don't seem to move around as much as they should and don't seem to be getting as clean as they used to. I can watch it agitate and the clothes that I put on top stay on top and just move around some. I just replaced both belts and the pump (these replacements were due to other problems). Can an agitator get worn out on the fins and make it do this? I thought that maybe I was overloading, but I tried it with only a few things and it does the same thing.

Hi,
LAT is part of the full model#. Are the water levels ok? Not common to see an agitator wear on a Maytag washer, but is possible. Upper and lower 1/2's of the agitator are moving? Spin and draining is ok? jeff.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I checked the agitation with only water in the tub and it seems to be working like crazy. I added some clothes and they just move around some . Both the top and bottom parts of the agitator move. The fins on the lower part of the agitator seem kinda flexible to me. Maybe that is the problem. I never watched my clothes wash before, but I would think that they should move from the top to the bottom of the tub while they are washing. I can't see how they would get clean just moving back and forth like they are doing. If I forget to add soap while the tub is filling and then sprinkle it on top of the clothes then it doesn't dissolve. It just sits on top where I put it. The water level is fine and the pump works now since I found a nickle in the inlet hose while changing the pump and removed. I went ahead and put the new pump on since I already had bought it. I think that I already told you that it also has new belts.

**The fins on the lower part of the agitator seem kinda flexible to me.**
They should be flexible. **LAT9200BAW** ![]() This is a solid style agitator, Maytag has a newer style that helps a bit with washing problems.... Dual action agitator**I never watched my clothes wash before, but I would think that they should move from the top to the bottom of the tub while they are washing** When loaded with the correct amount of clothes, correct amount of water, the clothes will move across the top of the water, down along side of the agitator, across the bottom and back up the sides of the basket in a circularmotion. **If I forget to add soap while the tub is filling and then sprinkle it on top of the clothes then it doesn't dissolve** Soap should be added first, clothes next, then start the washer up. **I checked the agitation with only water in the tub and it seems to be working like crazy.** -Sounds- like it is doing what it is suppose to. jeff.

Thanks for the reply. I think that I am just going to go and buy a new washer. My last Maytag was 18 years old when I had to retire it. This one is at least 15 years old, I think. What is a better choice for a washer? My husband is a gas compressor mechanic and his clothes look like he swims in grease and oil. I need a washer that really works the dirt and grime out of the clothes.

G'day,
**What is a better choice for a washer?** Some consumers opinions are linked here that may help. jeff.
