Default Help needed again for Maytag 1502ARW

JAKE,

I didn't think I would have to come back here. You gave me a lot of help at end of Aug. about my refrigerator (Maytag 1502ARW) which I bought end of July this year. Maybe you remember me. The freezer was not staying cold enough, but refrigerator temp is ok. I phoned the repair guy in mid Aug. and he put vaseline around the freezer and refrigerator door gaskets, and adjusted the levellers at the bottom -seal not tight enough I guess. Since then the freezer temp has been ok (-15 to -20C) but in the last 5 days its back to being like it was before. I can see wet moisture on my hand when I touch anything in the freezer when its on defrost and the temp goes up to -5C which is not cold enough and takes about 35 minutes for it to go back to -15C where it should be.I phoned the store Manager where I bought it and he said phone the repair guy again.He also said "the repair guy has to come and I don't think the repair guy will want to keep coming back for the same thing and will have to say it can't be fixed". He didn't say how many times the repair guy has to come back though. My problem with that is, the repair guy seemed to be sure what the problem was when he came before, so how can he do anything different next time? And how many times am I going to phone him and my freezer not working properly. I could put it on the coldest freezer setting but it worked ok at the second coldest setting for the last 6 weeks and if I put it on coldest, there is nowhere else to go after that and that might not solve it. Is my problem common with Maytag refrigerators? Any thoughts please?

Katie

Hi,

I need to find out what your temperatures are in both your freezer and refrigerator section?

My freezer thermometer is in Celcius and my refrig. is in Fahrenheit so to
keep things straight I will give you both temps in Fahrenheit. We are in metric, but I am more familiar with Fahrenheit myself. Freezer is usually between 5F and 14F which the repair guy said is about right for freezer. When freezer goes into defrost mode and I have noticed if I open the door, the temp in freezer can be 14F or 22F, but not always. Refrigerator is around 32F but if I open Refrig door to put stuff in or out, it might go up to 45F or sometimes 50F before control clicks back on.
But sometimes when I open door to the refrig. the control might come on in refrig. and if I open freezer right door right after, the freezer control might come on even though the temp is around 4F or 5F which is ok for the freezer temp. What I was mainly going by is sometimes when I open the freezer, the temp can be between 14 and 23F and the freezer is on defrost and when I put my hand on the boxes of food or even package of meat, there is a lot of moisure on packages, then a little while later, the moisure has frozen and has ice crystals. I should have mentioned - there are periods of time when the freezer seems to work ok, but other times, it seems to be too long on defrost cycle and temp is higher than it should be. It seems to be an intermittent problem. Hope I gave you what info you asked.

[quote=Jake;27044]Hi,

I need to find out what your temperatures are in both your freezer and refrigerator section?

In my message I just sent, I meant to say freezer is usually between 5F and 4F when it is at a correct temp, NOT between 5F and 14F.

[quote=Jake;27044]Hi,

Jake, sorry but I screwed things up with another figure when converting Celcius to Fahrenheit, so I will give you the temp in Celcius which I know is correct. The freezer is at between 15 and 20C when it is where it should be. But sometimes when it goes on defrost, it can go to 5C or 10C
which is higher than it should go and thats at the times when I feel the frozen food boxes have quite a lot of moisture. There can be a small amount of moisture I know, but there is more than there should be.
The temps I gave you in Fahrenheit are correct as that is a Fahrenheit thermometer. one in freezer is Celcius. Sorry for the mixup and hope you are familiar with Celcius

LOL, Sorry, I'm extremely confused now.

You say your freezer is at 15C to 20C thats 59F to 68F, thats way too warm. Then in defrost 5C or 10C is 41F to 50F???

These numbers seem way off.

Lets keep this simple, normal temps. in your freezer should be -17C to -12C

Then your refrigerator section should be 2C to 4C.

Here is a simple conversion chart:

I'm not surprised you are confused and I don't blame you. LOL

Hi, sorry, yes, these numbers ARE way off because I should have said -15C to -20C (I left out the minus sign). I had those figures correct in my first message in this thread but in the last message I forgot to put in the minus sign and screwed things up. Actually, I *was* using a using a conversion chart- lol. What I have done in this message is put the temperatures in both Fahrenheit and Celcius which should make things easier. (I hope)

Lets keep this simple, normal temps. in your freezer should be -17C to -12C

And most of the time its close to that (well to be precise its between
-20C to 15C) (4F to 5F)but on defrost SOMETIMES when I open the freezer door, I notice the temp can be in area of -10C to -5C (14F to 23F) and the defrost is on and if I hold the freezer door open, it can go to 0C.

Then your refrigerator section should be 2C to 4C.

Refrigerator section is usually around 1.1C to 4.4C (30F to 40F) if door is not opened much, but if I open the door to put stuff in or out, if the temp is say 3C (37.4F) when I opened the door, it might go up to 10C (50F) before the control clicks on. I hope I got this right now.

Jake, you might want to know as it is an additional factor, that the temperatures I gave you in my message sent an hour or two ago, are based on when the refrigerator control is set at 5 (settings are from 1 to 7 with 7 being coldest) and freezer control is set at one notch from coldest setting (freezer control has no numbers, just what I call notches).

Ok, so everything seems fine.

I wouldn't worry about the fluctuations in the temperatures, as when you do have the door open, the temps. will rise.

As long as its freezing in your freezer and cooling good in your refrigerator section, it should be fine.

Its not just when I open the freezer door though.

Well, things are freezing in the freezer when the freezer has been on for a while , but quite often when I first open the freezer door and its already on defrost, the temp can be -5C (23F) and occasionally 0C (32F) which is close to what food temp should be in the refrig. part,and the outside of the packages in freezer have more moisture than I've seen on any freezers I've ever had. Also, for two months after the repair guy came,the temp in the freezer didn't go up to -5C (23F) and the repair guy said it shouldn't go that high even on defrost, and said the seal on the freezer door is not as tight as it should be so would seem to be the same problem, but I need him to see it. Anyway, since it worked ok after he came before even at a lower control setting, and moisture on the packages was not a problem, I phoned him today. He is coming tomorrow. The refrig. is under warranty for a year and since I am in doubt about the freezer performance, I may as well see about it now. I'll let you know what he says. Thanks Jake.
