MAYTAG MODEL NUMBER MTB1894ARW - sounds like its always running?
Hello all,
We live in Canada and we just purchased 18.1 cubic feet top freezer Maytag model MTB1894ARW from Home Depot. We've only had it for one week, but it sounds to me like its always running. We use to have a 23 year Whirlpool and it only required one repair in all the time we owned it. Also I don't remember it running this often, for the most part it was quiet.
I've been told these energy efficient models tend to run more? Is this true?
I'm nervous about this purchase after reading all the problems with Maytag. Does anyone own this model? How has your experience been?
Thank you in advance for any comments or help!

Thank you for replying. I checked eopinions but they don't have my model for sale. From what I read at some sites my3cents and consumer affairs, it seems some maytag refrigeratorss do have lot of problems with compressors, defrosters, noise levels, etc. From these sites it made me feel like maybe Maytag brand is no longer a reliable brand to buy.
I apperciate your response that they have "little problems" so that is resassuring.
If anyone owns this model, please let me know what your ownership experience has been.
The warranty on the compressor and parts is only 1 year in Canada. I read on another thread it should be 5, I'm not sure if this is a recent change.
Thanks again for your reply.

Whirlpool started the one year only warranty last year, Frigidaire and Maytag have changed to one year only now as well.

What brands offer longer warranties still? Also in your opinion how long should a compressor last? In our last fridge it was OK for 23 years.
Thanks again.

I don't believe any do....they want you to buy the extended warranties.
Also in your opinion how long should a compressor last?
Should and will are two different things
Should last 10+ years....but most today are 3-5 years or so.
In our last fridge it was OK for 23 years
Won't see that any more!

Recently, I bought Magic Chef CTB1826ARW from Home Depot. CTB1826 is also made by Maytag and is almost identical to Maytag MTB1894ARW.
According to Magic Chef Use & Care Guide, it has 1 year full warranty and 5 years limited warranty on compressor.
So far I am please with the MC.

Thanks Jeff, appreciate the info.
One more question, generally how much does it cost to replace the compressor?
Thanks Seven for telling me about the Magic Chef, I'm glad to hear you are happy with your purchase. I'm really hoping I got a trouble free fridge.:-) After reading some of the Maytag consumer complaints, I was really regretting letting the old Whirlpool go, even though it wasn't very energy efficient.

Approx $350-450.00
That is compressor, system supplies, reclaim, labour, etc...

carolanne,
The following calculation may show some insign of using your new fridge.
Using data from DOE of USA
Based on $0.07 per kWh
Running cost of 23 years old fridge =$129.22 per year
Running cost of MTB1894ARW fridge =$34.06 per year
Saving = $95.16 per year
In 10 years, you will save $951.60 when using the new Maytag fridge.
