Hello, I'm new here and you are my last resort. I have tried to post twice giving you a very long explaination of my situation, but each time when I hit the submit button, I get thrown back to not logged in and lose the whole message. So I gather it must be too long - I'll keep it short this time.
I have a Magic Chef model 34JN 5TKVW EV Gas range that was given to me from my uncle's estate. It is in pristine condition since he rarely used it. The paperwork for this range was not found; and to be honest I really didn't think that it was necessary since operating a stove isn't really that hard. Yesterday I wanted to use the delay cook feature (which. on my previous stove was very simple - one dial for start time, one for stop time, and one for delay cook). After two failed attempts - one which almost burned the dinner - I have deducted that you must put in the stop time first, and that when setting the "cook time" it means the length of time, not the start time. Hence, setting stop time for 5:00, and the cook time for 3:45 means cooking for 3 hours and 45 min, and the stove counts backwards from 5:00 p.m. starting the oven at 1:15 p.m. Is this correct?
After spending the entire morning yesterday on-line at the Maytag site, every appliance parts site, and on the telephone with Maytag, every appliance repair place in my area, and any other place I could think of it has become a vendetta to me to try to get the owner's manual for this thing so that if I ever want to find out their recommendations for cleaning it without using the clean feature, or cleaning the glass, or even a parts listing for future reference. Maytag is of no help since they don't recognize the model number and don't seem to give their reps a cross reference.
Can anyone tell me how I can get an owners manual for this range?

Jake-Thanks for responding. On one of the phone calls to Maytag yesterday, before switching me to the parts department, she said it was from 1991 - not that old in my opinion. Although, it has a very modern look to it - digital clock, sealed burners, white glass door. The buttons on the top are triangle shape. I can't verify the age at 1991, it really doesn't look like it's 15 years old.

So that's it? I'm SOL?? Can you tell me if that sounds like the proper proceedure for the delay cook feature? All I know is that when I put in stop time 5:00 and cook time 3:45 it started about two hours earlier than when I wanted it to - but it shut off at 5:00 on the nose. Believe it or not, my husband was home at the time, but was upstairs and didn't realize that the stove had gone on it wasn't at the time I had set. He only knew that it was for a longer period of time than the 1 hr. & 15 min. that I had wanted. So that's how I came up with the 3 hours and 45 min. which would have put the starting time at around 1:15 - a little over two hours earlier than the 3:15 pm I wanted it to start at.

Usually on most ranges it has a start and stop time for timed cooking, if you start it at 3:45 and stop is at 5:00 it should stop, I don't know why it has cook time at 3:45.

Yeah, that's what I thought too - It seems like the most logical thing - I don't feel so dumb now. I will have to play around with it this weekend while I am home to watch it. But as it appears, I have to set the stop time first, like say at 5:00 [p.m.]; then put in the cook time (the total time I want something to bake) like say 1 hour - which appears in the clock window as 1:00. The oven "timer" then counts 'backwards' and starts the oven at 4:00 [p.m.]. I don't know why it would work this way - but judging from the other day when I put in a 3:45 [cook time] intending the oven to turn on at 3:45 [p.m.] and the oven started shortly after 1:00 p.m. and shut off at exactly 5:00 p.m. (the stop time I put in) it appears to be the way it works.
If any of your associates or forum member have a range that works this way I would appreciate knowing if it is correct, or if something is wrong with my range.
Am I the only one that thiks that a 15 year old gas range is not old?

I can tell you the age of it, but I would need the serial#.

Yes, hopefully another tech. or member that has seen this issue before can help shed some light on whats going on.

Jake: Well, I have a few small bits of new information. I went to my Dad's house and looked at his stove. It is a Kenmore, and it is similar, but not exact - it is however right around the same age as mine. The names on the buttons are the same as mine, so I took a chance and asked him for his owner's manual. According to his manual, the following are the instructions:
"To Start Later and Stop Later:
1. Push COOK TIME button.
2. Set length of baking time with the SET knob.
3. Push BAKE button.
4. Set desired temperature with SET knob.
5. Push STOP TIME button.
6. Set time of day when baking should be completed with SET knot.
7. When STOP TIME is reached, the end of cycle tone will sound and the oven will shut off."

This is similar to what I had thought, but the "order" of things is different, but I am going to try it using these directions. It goes on to say that you can "Push and hold the COOK TIME button to find out when the oven will turn on."

I also did a search on this forum for the same model number as mine and found someone else who asked a [different] question about the range. I e-mailed them to see if they still have a user's manual and can tell me what it says. That person e-mailed back with a small question, so hopefully they can give me the exact information that I need. I will keep you informed, just in case you need it for future use.
