Angry Melted and cracked freezer walls in Maytag MSD 2356AEW

Unit was not cooling so following instructions I removed freezer rear cover and found a block of ice. After ice was removed I noticed the heater being bent some and the freezer walls on each side are melted some and cracked. What the heck went on? Can the walls be patched or otherwise repaired? I plan to replace the defrost unit and control board.
Any other ideas? thanks, (no cold beer for world series!)

Defrost likely stayed on too long at one time and this damaged the liner.

Good!

Adaptive defrost control board

Defrost heater and thermostat assembly

Since not seen I would likely cover with silver foil tape....or....
