Default Jenn Aire cooktop switch replacement

I too am having an issue with the instructions that came with the dual infinite replacement switch. (By the way,on the instructions the numbers of the old switch are indicated in parenthesis pointing to the new switch number). I have the model cve3400 and I read that it says to split the compound red wires and route one to L2 and the other one to 2. Unfortunately I didn't read the part about which red wire goes where and when I activated the switch, the breakers tripped. (the darkness was so complete, I thought for a second the whole neighborhood was tripped)

I reviewed the instructions and believed that I needed to reverse positions with wires located at 2 and P2. I did this and activated the switch and the dual burner works fine. However the other burners do not activate.

I assumed I had fried the switch and ordered a replacement. When I hooked it up, the dual burner worked, but still no other burners work. I then reinstalled the old non working switch, and now the other three burners work again, so I am pretty sure that I didn't damage them in this process.

Obvisouly there is something I am missing here involving the red wire that terminates in position p2. This wire seems to be hooked between all three burners and this switch. the instructions discuss this, but I guess I am stupid because I can't figure it out.
Any help out there?
