Default Maytag dryer trips breaker when turned on heat cycle

1995 Maytag electric dryer. Bought it used a few weeks ago. First problem was that it quit running. 71 year old repairman company sent out replaced thermal fuse or link. Said to check vents. I had just completely cleaned vent and currently total vent run is less than 3 feet. It's completely clean and clear. Last night, on an automatic dry cycle, it ran all night. Wife turned it off at 4 a.m and said clothes and dryer were extremely hot. This morning, I turned it to a regular timed cycle and it worked fine. While it was running I switched from regular to delicate and it tripped the breaker. Reset breaker and turned it back on. It blew breaker again. Now, will only run on fluff cycle. Anything that tries to engage the heating element blows the breaker immediately. Ideas?

Looks like a lot of people have reviewed this thread but didn't respond. It sounds to me like the heating element has shorted out somehow but I am not sure. The repair guy, the old guy who forgot his tools when he came out to fix it yesterday, will be back Monday afternoon. He is going to look it over to see if it is worth keeping, and if not, the company will replace it with another dryer. We have had it a month and it has worked about half the time. I think this is my last used dryer! I should have known better.

Yes, it sounds like the heating element is shorting out. Yup, its always best to just invest in a new appliance to save the headache of having a used appliance giving you problems like this.
