Default Maytag MSD2556AEB - Started making a buzzing noise

I've got a Maytag model MSD2556AEB I bought in 1999.

The other day I started hearing a loud buzzing noise. My first reaction was to check and see if the icemaker arm was stuck... that wasn't the issue. It was then that I realized this was a noise I hadn't heard from my fridge before... it was somewhat loud and coming from the refrigerator side, not the freezer side.

I investigated and I swear it sounded like it was coming from the top inside part of the refrigerator. I moved the temperature settings back and forth and that did nothing. I felt the filter to see if it was rattling and that wasn't the source either.

I killed the power to the fridge and turned it back on after a minute - the noise did not resume when I turned the power back on. 12 - 16 hours later the noise began again. I didn't time it, but it seemed to last for around 3 minutes.

Any ideas? I checked repair clinic and I didn't see anything that would be in the top part of my fridge that might make a noise like that. The noisemakers seem to be either fans or the compressor. Maybe the noise was just deceiving and it was coming from elsewhere... /shrug

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Mitch

Sounds like ( no pun intended ) a faulty adaptive defrost board...probably a relay chattering or such...it is beside the controls in the FF section.

Adaptive defrost control board

I would describe the noise as a buzz, more than a tick.

Thanks for the input.

Jeff, is that part located in the top of my fridge? I looked up there and didn't see anything like it. I've got the light and controls at the top of my refrigerator - is there a good way to take those down? I can take some pictures if that helps.

If I didn't replace this part and it died on me, what would happen? Would by refrigerator suddenly freeze up one day? The noise is loud enough that I need to do something... so I'm not suggesting that I plan to wait. I'm just curious what the next symptom would be if the adaptive defrost board failed.

Thanks again,
Mitch

Yes.

All of those panals come off to access the controls and defrost board.
#13 in the breakdown.

Could go either way....quit and the entire refrigerator will stop running. Could just forget to go into defrost mode and the cooling coils would plug up with frost and the refrigerator would run but not cool.

I found this thread by searching on the web and figured I would add onto this thread to hopefully help others that havent done this before.

I have a 2001 Maytag side by side MZD2766GEQ that started doing the same thing sound wise in the same area of the defrost board. My frig was still working fine but IMO it was only a matter of time before it didnt hence the preventative part replacement. Mine was also indeed the same board as the above in this thread and when replaced the sound has stayed away so far and I think that was definitely the problem.

Only thing I can add is for mine (the defrost boards are serial number specific) is that the new board looked a lot different than my other board which kinda lead me to believe or doubt that I may have gotten the wrong part intially. But the box part number and all the paperwork did indicate it was the right part. Just an FYI here, If/when you replace your old board, the new one may look a lot different or at least mine did. It also comes in a plastic enclosed case which I initally thought was just a trasportation thing so the board didnt get damaged. The old board has a sort of clear plastic piece attached to it and its used for the 2 screws from the bottom to attach to it to hold it in place. That plastic piece doesnt fit on the new board at all and is NOT used with the new board. What I found out after about a half hour is that the new plastic enclosure that comes with the new board is supposed to stay on/around the new board and it snaps into place where the old board one came out. You then can put 2 scrwws back through to hold it all in place (notice the 2 holes in the new plastic enclosure for the screws) although the screws that came out of the old one werent big enough to do the job correctly (they fell out right away) and I put some in that were a little bit bigger. I dont know if they were needed since the whole unit kinda snapped into place after it was plugged in but it worked out well and I dont have to worry about it moving around at all now.

Happy Repairs, Jim
