We bought a Maytag MZD2752GRQ side-by-side in July of 2003. After an initial problem with the ice auger, it has been fine until March of 2007. At that time, it began making what can only be described as a creaking noise, like something you would expect to hear on an old ship.

It had made such sounds in the past, but by shaking things up in the ice tray, or temporarily moving the sensor arm to the off position and then back to normal, the sound would stop. As of March 7, 2007, however, nothing seems to stop this back-and-forth creaking sound. Any advice would be much appreciated, the Pirates of the Carribean jokes are wearing thin!

Does the noise occur when you are trying to get ice or is it just making noise all the time, even when you're not touching the refrigerator?


If it makes the noise even when you're not touching the refrigerator, then you probably need a new icemaker.

If it makes the noise only when you are attempting to get ice, it could be the auger motor or the ice container. Take out the ice container and inspect it for cracks or any mechanical defects.

Thanks for the reply. The creaking noise is persistent, however, it actually stops when the refrigerator door is opened. It probably stops when the freezer door is opened too, I can't remember. It sounds like something moving slowly in one direction, then the opposite direction, over about a three-second interval.
