Default Maytag way too cold

I have an MSD2957AEW (1998). The freezer is at minus 10 degrees and the refrigerator at 29 degrees. I have the lever set at the lowest for both sides (one) closest to the off postion. This has been like this for a while. I don't know if this was a cause to my recent problem when it stopped cooling. Is there a setting or something else I can change?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi,

Since both sections are too cold, that is an indicator that the refrigeration system ( gas charge, compressor ) is fairly good.
Possible the cold/temp control is simply allowing the refrigerator to run too long.

Temperature control thermostat

I installed the temp. controler and the freezer is still at -10 to -12 while it's set below 1. I did get the refrigerator up to 34 on the number 4. Am I going to have a problem or is there something else I should check?
Thanks,
Steve

Well the refrigerator is staying at 28, and the freezer -12, both are set to below 1 on the controls. Any ideas?

Thats very odd, that temp. control Jeff posted should have fixed it, you may need to contact a local appliance repair company in your area, something else may be going on.

Default Temp Control Position

Remove your ice bucket in the freezer and look on the right wall You'll see a air duct cover held on by a 1/4" in screw. Remove the screw, then the cover, (you may need to use a flat head screwdriver to pry it from wall after screw is removed.) Once the cover is off you'll see where the temperature control enters the freezer compartment. Ensure the coil is ALL THE WAY inside the freezer section. If not, give it a pull until it is. I've seen a temp. control coil half in/out which causes improper reading thus the compressor runs almost constantly causing excessively low temperatures.

I pulled the probe through some more but nothing changed. It's still too cold.
