Default mah5500bww small leak then overfill

We have a 2.5 year old Maytag Neptune frontloader (MAH5500BWW) that started to leak a small amount of water from underneath the front of the washer. One cycle seemed to take extra long. One time this happened, the washer wouldn't spin dry from the cycle but did after being stopped and then initiating a spin independently. The repairman could not detect anything wrong (starting water only cycles; pausing, spinning out) - he suspected the door boot, but it looked fine. He left without replacing anything, telling us it might be a fluke and it wouldn't hurt anything to keep using.

That evening, we had the small leak again and, when it kept rinsing and spinning for 30 min beyond the wash time, we shut off the water taps and got it to go into a spin after a stop. We tried one more load, but the washer overfilled early in the cycle and flooded our basement!!!

Please advise - this was pretty traumatic and we're not confident about the repair guy's diagnostic ability. Thanks!

It sounds like something is clogging your air pressure line that tells the water level pressure switch to turn the water off. Or your water inlet valve is going bad.

The pressure switch is located on the drain pump, just remove the little rubber hose that connects to it, and blow through it, or use something to blow through it with.

Here is a help link to access it:

Thanks very much! It was the water inlet valve. Finding the part meant looking at what we had - apparently Maytag used three different valves for this series of washers. No more leaks and no overfill disasters.

It was great to have your prompt expert advice. This is a great site!

Glad you got it fixed and working again.

Here is the parts diagram for your model in case others need to order a water inlet valve as well on diagram#3 part location#2:
