On October 8, my wife and I came home from a relaxing weekend away with water flowing out our garage. Thought it was the water heater. We entered the house to 1/4" of water in half the house. Nope, the Maytag refrigerator water dispenser (Model # MSD2556AEW) was running for an unknown number of hours. Maybe as long as 84 hours. Just one more problem with that fridgin' fridge.
There is multi thousands of insurance $$$ damages plus my huge deductible. Is this a manufacturer design defect?? It seems it is. If there were a failure of a circuit board or solenoid the default failure should be to turn all off not on. Kind of like a car, a carburation problem should cause the car to stop, not accelerate at full speed. Any help??? Tom[/quote] |

Today I was in my kitchen when the light in the dispensor on my Maytag Fridge (MSD2756GEB) starting flickering. I could hear the clicking of the switch - it was not an issue with a loose bulb or something. And it should've been off at the time. This has actually happened before. While the light was still having this spasm, water started shooting from the dispensor!! I was across the room. No-one had touched the fridge in minutes. Thankfully it stopped after a few seconds. Only a small mess. I will now turn off the water supply to prevent the kind of catastrophies I've read about here.
This unit is about 7 years old. I've been having an issue with the ice maker not working properly, leaking water (which freezes of course) all over the freezer. I've replaced the valves but that was no help. I'd like to repair it to save money, but I sure wish I could afford to get rid of the darned thing. I will never buy another Maytag product ever. What a mistake. And I went all out, too. Maytag Neptune Washer/Dryer set, the dridge, and the Maytag Dishwasher. All of have had problems that indicate serious design flaws. So is this a problem with the circuit board? WHat is the solenoid for that's been mentioned? Thanks. |

As a followup. The insurance company sent a tech out to diagnose the cause of the house flood. It was a faulty circuit board on the refirgerator. Maytag never never had a recall on this model. Although it is obvious there was a design flaw. i.e. when the circuit board goes out it opens the water dispenser rather than shut it down. The tech disconnected the water supply from the door. I would recommend if you own this model, you do the same.
We all thought Maytag is top of the line. It's not. They have done nothing to better its goodwill. Although the insurance is paying for the damages less my huge deductible, the hassle and fear of it happening again will prevent me from buying another refer w/a water and ice dispenser. I guess that is why Whirlpool bought Maytag out... |
