Default Freezer temp fluctuates 20 degrees or more

Brand new Maytag MTF1895 upright. Freezer will not freeze ice cream unless set at max in both refrigerator and freezer settings. When it does freeze the freezer temp rises as much as 20 degrees and ice cream turns to mush. Maytag sent out a tech who said he could replace the cold control and that should help. Somehow I have my doubts. Now I am waiting for parts. Should I wait or is Maytag unable to freezde ice cream? Less than a month old. Is this acceptable or should I ask for another unit. Or are Maytag refrigerators bad boxes. There is nothing he could adjust and the freezer control is nothing more than a damper to let cold air pass. Are there better designed refrigerators out there or is this the way it is with all upright freezer on the top models? charlie

I own a Admiral refrigerator/freezer and its been running great since I bought it new in 1999, Admiral is made by Maytag. Maytag's are very good.

Do you notice a frost build-up on the back inside freezer panel? If not, you may have a compressor/sealed system problem, which in that case would be better to have your refrigerator exchanged.

If you can put a freezer thermometer in your freezer and post the temperatures it gives you here.

This is the one I use in mine:

The freezer should always be between 0-10 degrees.

Default freezer changes temp

Thanks for the reply

There is no frost buid up anywhere. So far it seems that each night with both controls set at their max, the freezer thermometer (a cheap mechanical one) reads -20. I check in the morning and and it usually reads 0. At -20 ice cream is frozen--at 0 ice cream is soft. The tech suggested a control part might not be calibrated right so that was his only solution other than to say that the Maytag should be able to freeze ice cream. So it is either wait for a part or seek an exchange. Any thoughts?

Normal freezer temperatures should be between 0-10 degrees, so ice cream at 0 is perfect. I know for a fact that the higher quality ice cream that has more cream in it won't freeze rock solid like the cheaper brands.
