Hello,

I just replaced a burnt out relay on a Beverage Air MT45 model compressor. Everything went smoothly till i came across a mystery wire. Well it is a mystery to me atleast, hopefully not to one of you professional repair techs.

Here is a picture of the wire marked by the red arrow.



Here is a pic of the schematic for the relay.



Could this brown wire connect to the Start Capacitor? It isn't labled on the wireing schematic so i'm just confused as to where it could go. Oh, the brown wire follows from the same direction as the power leads from the disconnect switch. I don't know if it goes TO the disconnect switch or not though.


Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Very interesting, I've never worked on a Beverage Air MT45 model compressor before, but usually the brown wires do go to the start capacitors on normal A/C units.

Do both terminals on the start capacitor have wires already on them?

Yah, i have both of the capacitor terminals wired as indicated by the wireing diagram. This is the diagram that is on the inside cover of the relay box. As i mentioned, i thought it would go to the start capacitor too but there are only male terminals on the capacitor and i don't remember removing a female terminal adapter.

Another reason i am thinking it was connected to the capacitor is because the rubber boot on the end of the wire isn't melted or burnt as was all the wireing inside of the relay box. So im confident quite confident that it doesn't connect to the relay.

If i follow the wire back to where it originates from would that help you determine where it is supposed to be connected?

That looks like a capacitor wire with the rubber boot around the terminal end. Check the wires on the capacitor and see if one doesn't have an extra terminal end for that wire or "piggyback" connector.

I followed the brown wire back to the common terminal on the condenser fan switch.


Any ideas? :/

I've never seen a condenser fan motor with it's own on-off switch. The condenser fan motor should be running whenever the compressor is running. To turn it off while the compressor is running would keep it from cooling and risk compressor damage. Could that switch be a main power switch? I'm trying to locate a wiring diagram as we speak.

I tried to find a wiring diagram using several resources. I have a friend in the commercial refrigeration field and tomorrow he will try to look it up for me. All though I've worked on many commercial refrigeration applications most of my knowledge is on domestic applications. It looks like your unit is a 45.9 cubic foot refrigerator. I don't know what a Chromatography refrigerator is but I did see the wiring diagram you refer to. I also looked on page 9 of that pdf about troubleshooting and none of the steps mention anything about the condenser fan switch. The only thing I can think of that would use a condenser fan switch is a smaller commercial unit that normally doesn't need a fan to remove the heat. Only when it's being used a lot ( in and out of the unit) a fan might be used to maintain the inside temperature. Have you tried turning the unit on and seeing if it runs? And or seeing if the condenser fan motor is working?
