Question Kelvinator freezer not freezing well

Hi,

I have an older Kelvinator refridgerator. Model number TSK206DN. This model has the freezer in the top and the fridge in the bottom.

The last few days I noticed that the freezer is not working very well. For example a tray of water for making ice would not freeze up.

There is one shelf in the freezer. The inability to freeze seems to be more of a problem on the shelf than on the bottom.

I recall in a previous situation on another refridgerator the defrost cycle was not happening and so ice was built up. I do not know if this is the problem this time.

I emptied the freezer and removed the ice maker (which is not hooked up to water) then removed the metal panel in the back of the freezer. This was after I had unplugged the fridge for a while but not a really long time. There was no ice on the coils with fins
(I am not sure what you call this but assume it is:
Heat-exchanging pipes - serpentine or coiled set of pipes inside the unit ).

Do you have any suggestions on how I can proceed to diagnose the problem and if I need to change parts what I need to remove to get at the part to change?

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,

Thats the evaporator coil that its called thats inside your freezer.

If you didn't find any frost build-up on that, then its likely your compressor is starting to wear out and thus causing the lack of cooling.

I awesome this unit is about 15-20 years old?

A new compressor can only be installed by a licensed refrigeration tech. and the cost for the compressor and labor would exceed the price for a new refrigerator.
