Hello,

I have a 4 yr. old kenmore side by side model #25351399103. It started to make some strange sounds(humming like a dirty air ionizer). I then noticed that it completely lost cooling and defrosted. I unplugged it for few hours then plugged it back in and within seconds I could hear something like a relay clicking, the compressor did not come on. I shut it off for couple of days , then plugged it back in and I could hear the c ompressor come on and it started to work like normal, cooling properly, however it still made some strange electrical sounds off and on. after running for about a week it stop cooling again, and now it will not restart the compressor even after I left it unplugged a day or so...... it just clicks off a relay I believe.NOt sure if comp[ressor is the issue??? the lights and fan(near coils) are working, but no cooling or sound from compressor or inside fan.

I am also wondering if this has a 5 year warranty?? can not find original papers but the it was mfg. 12/01.

thanks:?:?

By your description it sounds likely to be the compressor or its starting device (relay/overload - see the following link).

The compressor itself should be warranted for at least 5 years, the labor and service charge might be too. You'd have to check with Sears about that or maybe Jake can say.

If the problem is just the compressor's relay/overload, that part is usually only warranted for 1-year from date of purchase.

JFYI

Hello again,

Just wondering if you think it is worth ordering the relay and installing,($27.00) I know I can do it. in your opinion /experience would you go ahead with relay r/r. the compressor shows no signs of leaks or bad solder etc.... and it did cool perfectly in between down time....

thanks

Hi, the 253 model is aKenmore made by Frigidaire, The compressor clicking on this is usually a bad compressor.

The 106 model is a Kenmore made by Whirlpool, and the clicking on this is usually a bad relay.

The way you check a relay is to get a OHM meter to ohm out the start and run terminals in the relay, if there is continuity, then the relay is good.

You should have the 5 year warranty on compressor and labor.

Jake
