Arrow Chest Freezer Help Needed!

I just recently moved into a new house last week and it has a Montgomery Ward 23 cubic foot chest freezer in the basment. The people that lived there before probably never lifted a mop in there lives because everything in the house was grose and dirty including the this freezer. Early this week (I think Sunday) I unpluged the freezer to defrost it and clean out the nastyness they left in it for me. Yesterday morning (Thursday) I plugged the freezer back in to get it running again. I checked it when I got home from work that day and it wasn't getting cold at all, so I thought I would let it go overnight. I checked it again in the morning and it was as warm as it was 24 hours ago. I also checked it today on lunch and it still wasn't cold. The inside walls feel slightly chilled, but nowhere near enough to freeze or even refrigerate anything. The compressor has been running non stop as if it was trying to cool it. I was wondering if anyone would know what is wrong with it and what I can do to fix it. Before I unplugged it, the freezer worked because there was a bunch of frost built up on the side walls of it. I appreciate any help I can get, this freezer is just too big to give up on yet. I have the thermostat turned to the coldest setting aslo.

Hi,

Running and not cooling = major system problem....inefficient compressor, system leak.

Sorry, sounds like shopping time.

jeff.

Unhappy

Thanks for the reply. I thought it probably would be something serious. I did try and turn it on again this weekend and the compressor made a bit of vibration/shaking/slight rattling noise. I'm guessing this narrows it down a bit more to the compressor taking a puke. Let me know what you think. Thanks again!

Definetly not a good sign for a healthy compressor!!

Sorry

Jeff,
I had a quick question. My parents have a kenmore upright freezer that they are going to give me that works fine. I was just wondering which is a better freezer? An upright one like a fridge, or a chest freezer? I'm thinking it might just depend on your preference. Let me know what you think when you get some time. Thanks

I tried to run the freezer one last time hoping it might just start workng again. I let it go for about 4-5 hours and the compressor was getting really hot, I couldn't hold my hand on it for more than 2-3 seconds. Any new ideas or is it still junk. Also would it be worth fixing or would it be cheaper to buy a new one. (My brother wants the parents upright freezer)
