Default Water dispenser sometimes OK then stops

Sorry no model number at the moment, I am away from the unit. I can supply later if required.

I have a Maytag side by side with water dispenser and icemaker. I have posted this in the general section because it may be a generic problem.

The problem is the water dispenser.

When the water supply is first connected to the refrigerator, the water dispenser operates OK. The after a number of uses (this number varies) the water dispenser stops. There is clicking of solenoids?? (not sure if they actually open) but no water flows. I have discoverd that I can temporarily correct the problem by cracking the connection at the water supply isolating valve, then the dispenser operates again for a short while.

Any ideas or clues anyone. Could it be airlock or similar.

Has anyone come across this before and how can I cure it.

thanks

Phil

Hi,

The water pressure to the refrigerator is strong?

I always make sure to run the water line to the refrigerator into a bucket to check the pressure before i hook it to the refrigerator water valve.

If its strong, and no leak is present, chances are good the water valve is going out.

Thanks for that Jake

I think the water pressure might be quite high, but I am not sure how to measure how high it is. How do you judge how high the pressure is using a bucket?

Could it be that the solenoid valves in the unit will not open against a high water pressure?.

Does anyone know what max pressure the valves can operate at?

Is there a simply way to reduce water pressure?

Just so the water that streams in the bucket is a good steady flow. Its un-common to see it too high, more than likely the water valve solenoid is starting to not open fully, causing your issue.

Thanks again Jake

I have definitely got good flow at the water supply isolating valve. At the moment the system is working and I have got a good flow at the water dispenser.

If the solenoid valve is suspect, are there any further tests I can carry out to check it's operation. eg, when the flow at the dispenser stops again, should I check the solenoid valve at the rear of the refrigerator, and if so, what am I looking for.

regards

Yea, Un-mount the water valve from the refrigerator back, so you can pull the water valve assembly out some for better access, then unscrew the plastic water line tubing nut that connects to the water valve, then get a small container and place it under the water valve, then have someone push the dispenser lever in front, then you can see how fast the water is coming through the valve directly.
