I have a Kenmore 80 series washer. The cold water has slowed to a trickle and the valve probably needs to be replaced. (hot is ok). My problem is getting the top off so I can get to the valve. I just pulled the other knobs off, but the timer knob refuses to let go.
In another forum it says to pull on the inner portion of the dial while turning the knob counter clockwise. This isn't doing the job and only stripped the inner knob (I think). Looking for another way of skinning this cat. Thanks Rich Follow up: I can't seem to delete this post, but I found out what I was doing wrong. I was pulling on the inner ring instead of pushing. Pushing locks the timer and you just unscrew the knob...now...on to the valve. Last edited by Rich46; August 13th, 2005 at 09:19 AM.. |

Well..we don't know exactly what you have without a model number (should be on a sticker where you put the laundry in, should be 110. and 8 digits), but methinks you've made work for yourself. I can't think of any washer that needs the knobs removed to get to the water valve. Hopefully, you see this before trying to take the back off.......

Model 110-26812690
You're right, the knobs didn't need to come off, but it wasn't that much work. The 3 on the left just pull off. The timer knob needs for you to hold the plastic circle/ring to keep it from turning, then turn the finger knob counter-clockwise to unscrew it. I didn't see any other way to get it loose and thought that was the way. Finally figured out that the two side plates (wings?) just pop off from the top toward the front of the washer, revealing the screws at the bottom. Take those out, the top comes off, revealing the brass clips on each side. Pop those out, take the two screws out of the bottom back plate and the machine sort of goes limp and you can work on its innards. The water valve is bad. Hot is slow and cold is nothing but a trickle. I'll have to get a replacement. |

Good job on figuring out how to remove the cabinet to get better access to the water valve!
Jeff1 has a good webpage on this at: http://www.applianceaid.com/procedures.html Jake

I saw one of your postings that had that link on it and looked at it. But it didn't show me how to get the top off. Mine has a couple of snap in sides on the control panel that I couldn't figure out how to remove.
Once I saw they just pulled forward from the top then the rest was downhill. I had a really old Kenmore that the whole back panel just unscrewed and you could get access to most everything. In this newer model the back panel is not only one piece, it is substantial support for the washer's frame. Once that comes loose then the rest of the machine gets real wobbly; no support. Anyway, to get to the water valve you have to open this panel to get access. I don't think you could turn it on its side and take it off. ![]() |

Yeah, could have used that picture yesterday, but I finally figured it out. I went back to that page and still couldn't find the picture. I guess I'm blind
. I found another one that would have helped, even though it wasn't the same thing it was on the page you linked to. I had to put it all back together again until I got the part so the wife could do some laundry. Got the part so now all I need is some time and I'm back in business. |
