freezer works fridge doesn't
I have a 6 year old kenmore fridge on top freezer on bottom . When it was 2 years old the fridge wasn't working but the freezer was. The repair man came out and by the time he found out what was wrong and fixed it he was at my house for about 6 hours. You can imagine that bill. I could have bought a new fridge. He said that the lines were frozen and cold air couldn't reach the fridge. Anyway it's been fine until this week when it happened again. Instead of calling the repair man I unloaded the fridge into coolers and the freezer into my downstairs freezer and just unplugged it and let it just thaw out for 2 days. I turned it on and if worked fine. I loaded it back up and then in 3 days it didn't work again. I again unloaded and unplugged and waited another 3 days. I have turned it on but I haven't put my stuff back in because i'm afraid it's going to do it again. What causes this problem and how do I prevent it. The repair man didn't fix anything he just thawed it out and did basically what I did but with a heat gun. Help i'm tired of living out of a cooler.

First, no tech that's worth his salt would take 6 hours to diagnose a defrost problem. Steer Clear of that service company. Back to your refrigerator. Sounds like once again you have a defrost problem. It's either the defrost timer the defrost heater or the defrost thermostat. Remove the back wall of the freezer. While it's still frosty, use an Ohm meter to check the heater and thermostat. You should get a reading of 0.0 on both. If you get a reading of 1, it's bad. If both check OK replace the defrost timer. I will need your model number to tell you where it is.
