Default Kenmore 587.15252402 fills, but never sprays

Model Number: 587.15252402
Brand: Sears Kenmore
Age: 1 -5 years

I bought this unit used, but it is only 2 years old. Of course, the person said it works fine. Anyway, it fills with water, sits forever, the sprayer arms never spray or move, then it drains and fills for the next cycle.
I called our local repair guy who just happens to be the father of the person who sold it to me and he said, oh yeah, I had to look at that for her before. He says it was not the electronic panel or a motor or pump, but that he thinks the top rack needs to be pushed up against the back wall for it to engage and he couldn't see any adjustment to make to get it to do that. He mostly works on Maytags.
My question is, does his diagnosis make sense? Have you ever heard of that? Or is it likely something else (switch, motor, etc)? How do I figure this out? Am I better off trying to fix this or just get a different unit altogether?
Thanks! (I'm a new member, so never used this forum before)

No, that makes no sense at all, if it just fills then sits, you don't hear the wash motor? or the wash motor even hum to try to come on?

Well, it's been awhile since I actually tried to use it. I think it did sound like it was doing something, but I'll have to go home tonight and try it again to see. I'll post back tomorrow.
Thanks!

Ok, sounds good, the wash motor is possibly trying to come on if you hear it humming, but may have something jammed in it, or a bad wash motor bearing, not allowing it to run to spray the water.

Jake,
I went home and tried it out. It fills with water, but I don't think all the way--didn't seem like it covered the element (is it supposed to?)
Then NOTHING. no nothing kicking in. So, how do I test the motor? My husband thought that since there is only one motor that if it pumped water in and out, that the motor should be fine. What do you think? It does seem to go through cycles in some fashion because it pumps water in, sits for a long time, then pumps it out and pumps in the next batch.
Thanks!

No, the water shouldn't fill to cover the element.

Your water inlet valve is a solenoid that opens to let the water in, so that's not controlled by the motor.

Now you have a wash motor and a drain motor on this model, so if its pumping out then, your drain motor is fine.

Ok, it could be either the control board or the wash motor causing this, your tech. sheet will explain how to test them.

The tech sheet to test yours is behind the front panel.. you open the door and the 2 screws from bottom up on left and right sides releases the panel.. A good tool to have around the house is those beeping voltage testers that lets you know idf the circuit you touch is hot or not will let you know if power is going to the wash motor.

Here's the control board for your model:
Manufacturer part number 154718501 is RepairClinic item number 1467836

Here's the motor assembly for your model:
Manufacturer's Number: 154588402

If you purchase parts from our links here and you install them and it doesn't fix the problem, you have a 30 day full refund when you return them.

Hi. We tested the motor and it is indeed bad. however, the part number you gave does not match the one on the motor we took out. the number on the motor is this: 154594201.

I searched it on the link you gave me for the other motor and this is what came up: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/pa...&pn_=154594201

Is that the right one? if it is, then we'll need to order it. But there's no picture for me to be sure it's the same one.

Thanks again,
Aimee

Thats odd, the part# I looked-up is for your model, the part# on the motor itself may be an old part# thats been changed to the one I posted above.

That's possible, but I doubt it because the motor we took off of ours doesn't look like the one in the link you sent. That's why I was hoping for a picture on the one I searched.
Plus, the unit is only 2 years old, so would they have changed part numbers in that time frame? The units currently selling at Sears look almost identical to the one we have.
What do you think? Should I order based on my part number? Like I said, the picture of the one you posted does not look like the one we have.
Maybe I should check the model number of the dishwasher to make sure that was right to start with. I forget what I took it off of--I think the manual, but who knows if that was accurate.

PS Now I'm really confused because I was looking on Sears parts page and for the model number dishwasher I have, it says the part number for the motor is 58715252402, which is neither the one you have or the one I have. Hmmmm.

I found the picture of the part# you listed above:
The manufacturer has replaced part number 154594201 with this item, part number 154700101.) (Manufacturer part number 154700101 is RepairClinic item number 1469163
