Default [FIXED] Kenmore Elite Overheating - Venting OK

I have a ~6 year old Kenmore Elite with EvenHeat (model 110.64082201) which has never had a history of issues (i.e. no parts replaced) until a couple of weeks ago. With any of the preset programs, from high heat to ultra low heat, the inside of the dryer gets hot as blazes within about 5 minutes and then automatically shuts down showing the "E1" error on the digital display. If I use air dry instead, it completes its cycle just fine for the time I set it for.

I checked the venting and even disconnected the venting from the back of the dryer and ran it ultra delicate (for ultra low heat setting) to test it, and it reproduced the problem like this as well.

Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

Hi,

I'd check for excess lint build-up inside your dryer and inside your lint duct.

you use a putty knife and push-in on the 2 clips on each side:

Unplug or turn off the breaker to your dryer before opening it up.

Here's the parts diagram for your model:

Remove the two #2 screws, then take off the duct assembly#45. Take the filter out first.

After you clean all the lint out, put the lint duct back together then run your dryer without clothes on normal, and watch your heating element to make sure it gets a light red color(NOT BRIGHT RED) while its drying, and time how long it stays on till it cycles off.

Default Kenmore Elite Overheating - Venting, Lint OK

Thanks for your reply Jake. I finally got the opportunity to pull the necessary pieces apart and check for lint. There didn't seem to be much, but I cleaned it all out anyway, and made sure the exhaust running out the back was free of lint and dust as well.

I put everything back together and turned it on normal without any clothes in it. It only ran a minute before shutting down with the familiar 'E1' digital error readout. The heating element didn't seem to be a bright red to me (i.e. not like a Christmas light), but it did have a healthy glow... it wasn't a faint glow.

I'm open to further suggestions.

Many thanks,
Shelby

The E1 is usually a bad thermistor, If no lints clogs are found.

Its located on the blower wheel housing, its #42 here:

It sits to the right of your white thermal fuse#59.

Unplug your dryer first!

Then Take the lint filter out, Then take off the duct assembly#45,
Its held on by those two #29 screws.

Let us know how it goes.

Default That did it

Thanks Jake! That did the trick. When I took the old thermistor out, I saw that a piece of the plastic casing had broken off, exposing the sensor underneath.
