Okay, I think I can put this in the "Fixed" category.
After weeks of getting really cold and then back to 50 then back to cold, I had the hypothesis that maybe not enough air was getting through up to the top to deposit cold air into the fridge. So what I did was basically "open" the encasing housing which had the fan inside of it and left it loosely open. My fridge hasn't had warm spells since then. Conversely the temp is about 20 degrees C now, but colder is better than warmer any day.
